Whichs keys for FPS gaming? Arrow keys or W,A,S,D?

i use WASD

W = Forward
S = Backward
A = Step left
D = Step right
Q = Lean left
E = Lean right
R = Reload
F = Action
Space = Jump
C = Crouch/Prone/Stand up toggle
Shift = Run/Walk
T = Team Chat
G = All Chat
V = Inventory

LMB = Fire
RMB = Alt Fire/Scope
Mouse Wheel = change weapons/zoom

Generally, its the people who started on 'old skool' games that use arrow keys as they were the default back then, newer games usually default to wasd so more newer players use those (I use WASD)
W - forward
S - Back
A - left
D - right
Q - Lean left
E - lean right
R - reload
F - use
Space - jump/stance up

LMB - Shoot
Wheel up - Change weapon
Wheel Down - Melee
RMB - Scope/ironsight

anyone else map Z and X also to left and right turn?

so you can turn using mouse and keyboard at the same time? (useful for running up spiral stairs in games like TFC)

Back in the days of Doom 2 I used the arrow keys, then I moved on to the number pad (as there are more keys around for other tasks eg reloading and leaning). I never liked the WASD as the W and S are not perfectly lined up.

But then about five years ago or so I gave up and went with WASD as it is usually the default keys and it is just natural now!

wasd here. I find the layout so much easier.

Ctr = crouch
space= jump
left shift= walk/run
tab = objectives/scoreboard
r= reload
f= light when applicable
e= use/open
left mouse = fire
right mouse = scope/zoom
roller = change weapon/zoom in/out

;)

This man speak the truth - anyone else is just wrong (leaning is for girls).

[tab] Q W E R T Y.............
..........A S D F G...............
.............X C....................
..............[ space ]......

[tab] = scoreboard
Q = lean left
W = forward
E = lean right
T = talk
Y = team talk
A = move left
S = reverse
D = move right
F = use
G = grenade
X = prone
C = crouch
[space] = jump

asdf ;)

Nah, wasd. I started off using the arrows but not only is it terrible (not many keys within easy reach) but i'm sure it's really bad for your arm and hand. You can't always move your keyboard from the typing position all the way to the left of your desk (to make using arrows comfortable), so you end up with your left hand practically underneath your right armpit and your hand in an awkard position. It cant be good for you.

wasd is far better ergonomically; if you put your hand in position with your middle finger on 'w', then slide down to 's' it's perfect. Your hand when resting on wasd is slightly rolled to the left so the slight difference in horizontal position of 'w' and 's' is perfect. It's like it was meant to be. (Eek that was a bit of an excessive explanation!)

So who else's wasd keys are far more worn than other keys? :p

I just use default everything but then again I can use any configuration on the keyboard.

If your left handed I suggest you use 8,4,5,6,2 on numpad much easier than arrow keys.

W,A,S,D

Since 1995 in duke nukem 3d :)

Mainly because, as stated above there are loads of keys around them but arrows norm have a lot of space around them. Also you can use the space bar. Placement makes them perfect for your left hand.
But also the letter keys are slanted slightly and are easier to use than flat/straight ones.

I norm use WASD for movement, ZXC for guns, Q for use/special, E for next weap, ALT for duck, R+F for anything else ;)
Also numbers 1,2,3,4,5 for say_team
I knew someone who used ASDF for movement somehow :eek: and they were div1 on quake2 in the clan I was in :)

Weirdest I have seen was a guy at iseries. He turned his keyboard length way and used I,J,K,M

My E key is almost totally gone, although looking at my postcount I think spamming has something to do with that.

i'm a freak and use home/end/del/pgdn.. the arrows i use with my thumb and my index finger and thumb can reach the numberpad. it does me no harm though, i do just fine in fps games.

Mine on my old keyboard are :)

You can just about make it out (the black is my old one, white is new).
The White one I have now (have had it since September 2005) is showing it also, altho mainly WASDZXC seem slightly beige compared to the other white keys.

I'm right handed :D

I blame my best mate, he got me in to gaming CS1.5 and he mapped the keys at the very start and I stuck with them!

I'm going to change them now and stick with it, more keys is what I'm after!!

nah wsad as well.

Can't be having c for crouch either, specially on games without a toggle for crouch. How do you move sideways, forwards and crouch at the same time?
