I prefer white bread but the girlfriend insists on brown bread as she says white is completely unhealthy. Is white bread really that bad for you?

I class white bread as basically sugar. Brown/wholemeal isn't that much better but it is better.

Who cares about which is better for you? Both aren't particularly good for you, unless you're bulking. The fact is, brown bread tastes better.

Though, having lived in France for this long, I am partial to a baguette or another variety of white bread.

As said, white bread is pretty much completely sugar. Brown at least has some more fibre in it.

White and brown supermarket bread is full of all sorts of **** to preserve it, which is why a lot of people feel **** after eating a lot of it. It's often not the gluten, because home-made bread is much higher in gluten and doesn't affect people the same way.

I eat homemade bread all the time, but I've never really considered how healthy/unhealthy it is. Is sugar the main reason that bread is unhealthy? If so I'm happy because I only use 1 teaspoon in a loaf :p

No, in fact white is more healthy (or less bad would be better). Wheat is unhealthy, brown bread contains more of it.

Read this (great website by the way): http://www.marksdailyapple.com/why-grains-are-unhealthy/ and you'll understand.

I'm not saying that the article you've linked to is complete rubbish but there are certainly a lot of very questionable "facts" in there.

I don't disagree with the idea of avoiding grains in a lot of food (so far as to say that just eating lots of bread is probably not the healthiest lifestyle choice) but...meh..that article is just a bit :s

It really is a sad state of affairs when you realise you know nothing about bread; one of the most basic and common foods :(

This currently sums up my viewing of the thread.

I have eaten about 2 loafs of bread this week, and now I find out its unhealthy.
I'll tell you what's more unhealthy... Fried Bread :D

If they're shop bought/mass produced/processed version of "bread" then neither are particularly good for you - full of sugars and additives.

However homemade bread is generally a lot better for you. Bread in itself isn't evil, especially if made properly - unfortunately however most bread that is manufactured is just poor quality. :(

Can't remember the source, but I read an article recently where the author was speaking out about their dismay, I suppose, about how bread was a staple part of peoples diets for centuries, yet now there's all this hype about it being unhealthy.

It's all about genetics, they don't change much over centuries and before we ate bread, we didn't. We haven't evolved enough to avoid issues with grains yet. Give it a few more thousand years and it might be less of an issue.

People are starting to realise all these illnesses of modern living are likely coming from diet.

Hovis best of both for sliced bread.

But give me a proper loaf or stick any day.
