I buy marks and spencer half and half loaves so we get both to stop the argument. I prefer white bread, the wholemeal and granary stuff goes right through me. :D

At home I use the bread maker though and do my own breads, I only buy shop stuff for sarnies at work as the bread maker stuff is only really good for the day you make it.

The energy from brown bread/pasta/rice/etc is released slower, lasts for longer and is less likely be deposited as fat.

White bread is only that colour because they bleach it ;)

Not for me. Brown bread at least has the same postprandial blood glucose profile. I've not tested whole wheat pasta or brown rice. The only really slow carbohydrates I've tested out have been from pluses.

Depends what i'm using it for tbh. Bacon sandwiches, cheese on toast and mopping up english brekkies has to be white, but I do like brown bread for toast and sarnies.

Brown v white bread

Bread of any type is healthy because it's high in complex carbohydrates and low in fat and sugar. It's also a good source of iron and calcium.

The extra health benefits of brown bread come from the wheat grains which give it its colour. Wholewheat grain is a good source of fibre, protein and B vitamins. With white bread, the husk of the grain is removed and only the inner part is used.

Brown bread
Wholemeal and granary contain much or all of the wheat grains, and these are the healthiest.

Other types are made from finely milled wheat where all the bran (and therefore most of the protein and vitamins) has been extracted.

White bread
In the UK white bread must, by law, be fortified with extra minerals or vitamins. In fact, it may have twice the calcium of wholemeal (although wholemeal has more iron and up to three times more zinc).

Also, beware of added salt in all breads. High salt intake can lead to high blood pressure, strokes and even some types of cancer.

'low in fat and sugar' yet has a GI higher than pure sugar. Don't believe this **** bread is not in the slightest bit healthy for you in any form.

Oh god, a little of some is not going to harm you, whats wrong with 2 slices of white bread on a Sunday morning with 3 rasher of bacon and ketchup.

Do you eat bread on a Sunday morning as a treat, or the every day staple for lunch like most people?

I won't preach but you should read up on this a bit more.

What's that 'Best of both' bread like? Anyone had it?

My personal fave
