I prefer white bread but the girlfriend insists on brown bread as she says white is completely unhealthy. Is white bread really that bad for you?

White bread is made up of all the white parts of wheat that is in low volume in brown bread (and obviously ver high volume in white bread because thats all its made of)

The white stuff contains nothing.... no goodness like fibre you get in brown bread, its just plain white wheat and once in your digestive system it turns into glucose and converts to sugar and nothing else.

Brown bread on the other hand contains lots of fibre and is a slow releasing carbohydrate (as opposed to white bread which just turns into sugar and is fast releasing energy, much like a chocolate bar)

Eating white bread is comparable to eating a Mars bar as an example, it turns into sugar and is fast releasing energy, making your body store fat.

Eating Brown bread is the opposite and does not only contain fibre a nutrients but is slow releasing energy and promotes fat loss instead of fat storage.

Are you being sarcastic? If so, nice post :)

Yeah - bread is so unhealthy. East one slice a year, and you will die. FACT. Brown bread has healing properties, and white bread gives you cancer. Grow up ffs.

White for us, but usually home baked, and our flour comes from our local 'specialist' shop. We keep a couple of shop bought loaves in the freezer for emergencies.

102 votes on bread preference!

Obviously an important subject for OCUK members!

I saw a thread on here about a month ago with people talking about how long their bread lasts, this is one of the comments (That I actually saved to notepad because it cracked me up so much)

"Until it either has mold, or goes too hard that it wouldn't taste very nice. I think i got a loaf once that lasted 10 days,
was chuffed with that, but then i get others that get mold in 3 days.

A good method for keeping it fresh longer is before scrunching the top and spinning it tight and putting the yellow tag back on,
first suck out all the air, this should eliminate a lot of the moist air.
Easily adds 2 days to the life of the bread I've found.
Just don't do it in front of anyone though or they'll think you're bonkers."

Haha, it seems bread is indeed a sort after topic here!

Do you eat bread on a Sunday morning as a treat, or the every day staple for lunch like most people?

I won't preach but you should read up on this a bit more.

Some days I might have 4 slices of bread, then none for a few days, depends on what I want.

Might have a pitta or wrap instead of bread.

Brown bread is for southerners and homosexuals :p

Its funny because the rich were the only ones that could afford white bread because it took longer and needed more equipment to make white bread, brown bread was eaten by the proles. No brown bread is generally more expensive than white

Its Science my friend :)

There are some elements of truth to your post but you've clearly got a passion for sensationalism, which has sadly caused your post to contain exaggeration and misinformation.

I won't argue that wholemeal bread isn't healthier and that the reasons are similar to those you wrote in your post but the truth of the matter is that your post was completely overboard: brown bread isn't as good as you make it out to be and white bread is far less bad than you make it out to be.

edit: isn't rather than is, kind of useful

GI index is a measure of the effects of carbohydrates in food on blood sugar levels. It estimates how much each gram of available carbohydrate (total carbohydrate minus fiber) in a food raises a person's blood glucose level following consumption of the food, relative to consumption of glucose.[1] Glucose has a glycemic index of 100, by definition, and other foods have a lower glycemic index.

Breads
Multi grain bread Low 48
Whole grain Low 50
Pita bread, white Medium 57
Pizza, cheese Medium 60
Hamburger bun Medium 61
Rye-flour bread Medium 64
Whole meal bread Medium 69
White bread High 71
White rolls High 73
Baguette High 95

*Table sugar (sucrose) Medium 65

Several lines of recent[when?] scientific evidence have shown that individuals who followed a low-GI diet over many years were at a significantly lower risk for developing both type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and age-related macular degeneration than others.[14] High blood glucose levels or repeated glycemic "spikes" following a meal may promote these diseases by increasing systemic glycative stress other oxidative stress to the vasculature and also by the direct increase in insulin levels.[15] The glycative stress sets up a vicious cycle of systemic protein glycation, compromised protein editing capacity involving the ubiquitin proteolytic pathway and autophagic pathways, leading to enhanced accumulation of glycated and other obsolete proteins.[16]

Enjoy those baguettes while you can, because you'll have trouble eating them with the onset of diabetes. Also isn't it strange that incidents of diabetes are increasing massively?

Diabetes and obesity rates soar

02 October 2009

The number of people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK has increased by more than 145,000 in the last year.

New data from GP practices show that there are now more than 2.6 million people with diabetes in the UK and more than 5.2 million registered as obese.

Shockingly, this means that one in ten people are being treated for obesity and one in 20 for diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes often linked to lifestyle factors

Around 90 per cent of people with diabetes have Type 2 diabetes, which is often, but not always, linked to lifestyle factors such as being overweight or obese, leading a sedentary lifestyle and eating an unhealthy diet. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), worldwide 80 per cent of people with Type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese at the time of diagnosis.

http://www.diabetes.org.uk/About_us/News_Landing_Page/Diabetes-and-obesity-rates-soar/

n the October 31, 2008 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, Centers for Diseases and Prevention (CDC) reported that the incidence of new onset diagnosed diabetes in U.S. adults has increased by 90% over the past decade.1

More refined food, more diabetes and bread is one of the worst, period.

Nobody is arguing against the point that white bread is less healthy for you than wholemeal bread.

The alarmist cack you're posting is what we have issues with as it's borne of the sort of daily mail stupidity that you see a lot online.

I didnt make it out to be super healthy, I just said what it is in a straight to the point way I thought would be easy for people to understand....Compared to White bread a slow releasing carb with lots of fibre.

I didnt make out white bread to be super bad for you either, I just said the way it is, compared to brown bread it has very little fibre and once digested is turned into glucose and fast releasing energy.

Slow releasing carbs in moderation with a good diet= Promotes the body to keep muscle and burn fat

Too much fast releasing carbs/glucose= body uses this as energy similar to sweets containing sugar thus stores fat and can cause insulin spikes once the energy wares off.

Of course everything is fine in moderation and you can eat white bread and be perfectly healthy, I was just explaining it the way it is.
