Somebody has decided to invite me to this group on facebook.

Don't people realise that every month is "White History Month"?

"Black" history month was instituted because at least in the USA where the black population is larger, you have kids growing up learning all about European history, but nothing about the rest of the world or any of the history of Africa. The curriculum obviously has to be balanced towards the needs and interests of the population that it is intended to educated - so in Scotland, Wales and Ireland, I'm sure it would be pertinent to have a reasonable proportion of a history curriculum dedicated to Celtic/Gaelic culture and history. This is no different, except it's just been given a name...

Thats very true. You should post that in the comments in the group and see what sort of responses you get....will give you an indication of the mentality of the group members.

OMG U R RACISTLOLZ

Our race in no way has a monopoly on history and saying that 'every month is white history month' ignores the fact that a great deal of world history doesn't involve white people.

If they want a white history month, why not?

Why does it require a name? I think that's most people's beef with it.

Because it is a bit pointless? It is merely a stand against something rather than anything useful but then again it isn't like it matters that much either way so I guess if people want to do something like this then why should it be an issue to me until and unless they use it as an opportunity to beat other people with (literally or metaphorically).

There should be neither black nor white history month.

Perhaps people should be given more choice about what they study, although that is hard to balance under a system as poor as the national curriculum.

Id be interested to hear what they want taught in WHM that isnt already being taught.

I wish i'd had the chance to learn about native Britons and Celtic history, all i ever learnt about at school was european and world history, the only British history i did was 19-20 century political and was boring.

Proper British history is very rarely taught these days aside from the obligatory kiddy visit to stonehenge or local roman remains.

As an addition to this thread, I also believe we don't learn enough about history in general - history is or has been largely relegated in the curriculum these days to almost an afterthought.

It would be equally as interesting to know why certain historical events are considered worthy due to their blackness alone, if this is not the case then BHM would merely represent a segregation in the curriculum - covering events that are already part of history in general.

Do you believe in BHM, Visage, or are you merely cynical when comes to the culture you identify with?

I think in the USA at least, a proportion of African history is pertinent to a lot of the population and to the history of the USA as a whole.

In all honesty i dont give a flying <ahem>. If black people wish to promote their own history then I dont really see why it should keep me awake at night...

And given that you aren't a racist, I imagine you'll also feel the same about white history month.

White history, white history... don't... make it... such a mystery.

For the same reason why there shouldn't be a black history month - it's a poltical tool to further promote an irrational division of humanity into two mislabelled groups that don't really exist and therefore to promote irrational prejudice based on that artificial division.
