Who here owns a Mini?

Yeah thanks mate have heard good things about them luckily Im just around the corner from the mini motorsport centre in shoreham. Im really hoping if I phone them early they can plug it in and see what the fault is. Im praying just an ABS sensor!:/

Ha that's crazy I'm originally from Shoreham but now trapped forever North...

If it makes you feel any better you aren't the only one with Mini woes at the minute. It looks like my rocker gasket has gone and I've already had it in with Mini to get it replaced and it's coming back still doing the same thing so after a long drive it looks like my car is on fire :p So gotta take it back and have a good old argument with them to get it sorted.

On the plus side my new wheels should arrive tomorrow.

Hope it's nothing too costly for you though :)

Yeah cheers me to mate, hope you get it sorted. I really enjoy driving the car I hope this isnt a sign of things to come :( What wheels have you got coming?

All cars have niggles, at least you are getting yours out of the way now. My thermostat went last year right before Christmas as well which was a pain but it's been issue free until this.

I'm getting some OZ Ultraleggera's which I might get re-done in some shade of Neon Green and get some spare mirror caps to be the same colour.

Oh lovely! :D I want to change my wheels, that was the plan before it all started going wrong. I dont like the bullets, I would love some BBS LM's but Im not paying 2k for a set:P

Diagnostic machine brings up off side front sensor, so getting fitted tomorrow same time as the power steering pump. Then an inspection one and two front top mounts on Monday. Then...want a couple of d dents removing near side rear, then it wants new bonnet stripes as the quality of the current stripes is naff.

Then tyres as the insides are somewhat heavily worn, must be where it's lowered pretty heavily.

Mini Motorsport are great mate, they look after my Mums Cooper S.

How much is all that going to cost?

Well luckily I work for GSF so I have bought all the parts myself at cost, and Tony at mini motorsport has been really fair with his pricing.

Its not ideal a week after buying a car but its luck of the draw sometimes isnt it. I couldnt of known about the ABS sensor, and the damn power steering seemed to be working when I drove it, then it stops working...

You might find you prefer it without the stripes, so consider it.

I do want to remove the stripes the only thing thats stopping me is the car is red...I have a fear that if I remove them I will have a bonnet multiple shades of red :D

Hi rare, sorry to hear you've not had the best start to your Mini experience. It will get better from here I'm sure! :)

Such a great little car. I'll be sorry to see it go.

Apologies for the thread necromancy but it seems better to ask in here than start yet another "What car should I get" thread. I'm giving serious thought to getting a Cooper S at some point in the next 12 months but I have a couple of questions.

Firstly, what are they like as an everyday car? My driving is mainly urban with a couple of return trips along the M62 every month. Are they ok comfort-wise on motorways or am I going to wish I was dead by the end of it?

Secondly, I'll be sharing the car with my girlfriend who is almost about to take her test. Is it likely to be too much of a handful for a new driver?

It depends on if you go for a Gen1 or Gen2 Cooper S.
Gen1 is supercharged and fuel consumption around town is poor but more reliable.
Gen2 is turbocharged and quite fuel efficient but there are issues with engines coking up due to direct injection.

Comfort can be bad with larger wheels and runflat tyres and insurance might be expensive for a new driver.

The R56 is fine every day.

Comfort wise they are fine, so long as you don't stick stupid big wheels on a car that has the sport suspension, otherwise they are crashy and unpleasant.

You'll need to change the oil more often than then service book says if its mostly used around town, and if you run it on super unleaded like it says in the manual, it won't coke up.

As for a new driver driving one, the steering is electric and weights up depending on how fast you are going, they don't need a lot of revs to get moving.

I had no problems driving 246 miles to devon in one hit in ours, nor blasting across the Pennines to manchester.
Its quite good on fuel as well.

I'm not sure how fuel would make any difference since it's not going past the valves. As far as I understand, the use of two oil catch cans is the way forward, and BMW dealerships may be investing in walnut blasting machines to loosen and remove the coking.

They do mention coking in the various SUL promo videos and how everything is cleaner

The reason im interested is a lot of VW engines coking up the oil system so badly after 2001, i hadnt considered the fuel much and just blamed the 20k service intervals
