Who here owns a Renaultsport?

Had it for 3 months so far and not a single problem so far. Averages a tank of Momentum a week, which is better than my last car which was a 1.4! Something must have been seriously wrong with it for that to be the case.

Looking to have some mods done to it (new scorpion exhaust as I think it is blowing), wheel refurb and then a steering wheel refurb.

Loved my 200 but I couldn't get on with the power delivery, just not to my taste.

Retrofit Recaros would be my advice on mods. They transform the car.

The power delivery is part of why I love it. Pull off from a stop and a lot of cars can get away from you until you hit 5k and then wave at them as you pull away :p

Got about £4-4.5 to spend and considering an Megane Renaultsport, am I being stupid? Is £4k going to just get me a shed or is there a chance of getting something decent.

Scoured AT, eBay, Gumtree & PH last night, some nice look examples around. Not much mention of cambelt changes though and a lot of them are around the 60-70k mile mark. An article online mentioned a cambelt change is a £1k job, is that right?

Had a read through this article, gave me a good idea of the variants to look out for.

EDIT: Just found the buyers guide I was looking at, does this over most relevant points?

Diamond motors (Renault Specialist based in Nottingham) used to have a detailed cambelt change price list on their website. I would imagine it will be something like £400-£500, that was the cost I was factoring when looking at 182s anyway.

I'd love a Megane, but I know I'd want a Cup/Trophy/R26 etc. And well I'm just getting too old for them, stupid stiff suspension and just wanting to put my foot down in every corner.

Wish Renualt would make a fast Estate.

As said budget for £500 from a specialist for the belts. There was a Trophy Megane advertised on cliosport forum last month for £2.5k that looked good. So it can definitely be done in your budget. Had an R26 and loved it. Check the windows work, my drivers side didn't :(

Ok, this is a good, a bunch of replies and no one telling me not to consider it. :) Will make sure I have £500 aside for a cambelt should it be required or there is no proof it's been done.

I'm currently driving a 2002 Clio 172 so it should feel a decent step up in power.

My commute is only 5 miles a day but do a lot of driving over the weekends and the 172 is just starting to feel a bit slow. It's also getting to that point where i'm spending a lot to keep it on the road.

I've just been hit with a curveball, someone at work has an Astra VXR and swears blind he's also had an R26 and the VXR is better. Hadn't even glanced in that direction but now find myself on google reading about VXR's.

Had a 182, changed to an R26, then 370Z now back in a 182 (house move/finances). The R26 was a big step-up from the Clio, felt better put together (apart from known window regulator fault) was easier to drive fast due to turbo (also cheaper to get more power, ie remap). Also due to the wider track and LSD the R26 handled even better in the corners :)

Never driven a VXR so can't compare. I can remember Jeremy Clarkson driving one on Top Gear and loving it despite the torque steer, but I'm sure he said he wouldn't buy one with his own money ;) :D

Drive the R26 and then drive the VXR, do the same route with plenty of bends. If you don't already know what understeer is, you will after driving the VXR ;)

Most cars feel slow when you get used to them though. And tbh Clio sports are hardly 'fast' most hot hatches are much quicker. Especially the list of cars he's looking to upgrade too. The r26 is what 70-90bhp more? That's a lot! The vxr would leave a 172 (straight road of course ;))

I'm considering a R26 for my next car. Sold my 182 about 18 months ago, and regretted it from day one. But at the time I needed a bigger family car.

Now my wife drives I'm planning on getting her a nice family car, so i can go back to something less practical to get me to work and back.

Do they have similar running cost to a clio 182? I assume servicing is pretty similar, and parts etc. But the 182 was pretty decent on fuel for what it was, is the R26 similar? I do about 50 miles a day commuting to work along with further busy travel between meeting and site visits, so don't want something too thirsty to be honest.
