Who here owns a Renaultsport?

I have a Renault Megane II 1.6 petrol (2006, non sport, but figured you guys could help?) that has a five year old timing belt.

What sort of cost should I be looking at for a garage to change this, as I don't really want to risk it any further?

Renault are asking £199 which to be honest I'm not sure is a good deal or not?

Cheers.

are renault giving you the price for just a belt, with no labor lol, £199 sounds mega cheap for them, make sure they do all the belts

By all the belts, do you mean the aux and fan belt too?

I sure hope that it includes labour too, as otherwise that is expensive.

Renault's price is on their website.

Worth getting all the belts, tensioner and water pump done at the same time? Whilst they're doing it? Anything else I should be aware of with a ten year old, 100k miler Megane? (Other than everything...) :D

e; worth pointing out that the car is in at Renault tomorrow anyway for a diagnosis on the air bag. The light on the dash is always on and another garage have confirmed it's not the wires under the seat, but definitely the steering "squib". With the MoT this week, and the belt work etc. it's looking less and less like I want to keep this car. I've lost a lot of faith in it! It's probably only worth a grand at most.

Having said that, changing to something else is a risk too.

must be way better place then Renault to get it done? where abouts in the west midlands are you?
yeah i would do all of what you listed, i do not know if the Meg engine has a depahser like my clio does, but might be worth doing that if they have one

The most local "specialist" garage is a joke of a place, really dirty and grimy place with no customer service skills at all. They "fixed" the squib just over a year ago and now it's gone again, we took it back to them when it was intermittent and they told us "it's fine, it will go away". It didn't and now it's on permanently. And now they want us to pay full price for labour and parts for the same item!

Other than taking it to a non-specialist, I'm left with Renault (who on the live chat have advised that they will pay for the squib if found to be a faulty part, rather than a faulty fitting.

Diamond Motors in Nottingham are probably the best bet for you.

Perhaps a little far out for me, but thanks for the suggestion. Are they that good?

There's a chap my dad takes his Renault to near Malvern, Hanley Swan I think. Fairly sure he's a Renault Specialist.

Seemed to get decent service from them during an MOT fiasco last year (MOT not done by them)

Fred who used to run BTM in Birmingham (well respected) recommends Sean Edwards Renault Specialist Shirley for the midlands.

Otherwise the main guys are as mentioned -

Mick @ Diamond Motors Nottingham.
Dan @ SJM Glastonbury.
Chris @ Beaniesport Milton Keynes.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

By all accounts I'm beginning to question the sanity of throwing more money at this car. We're not entirely sure we need a second car right now and my girlfriend doesn't exactly like the motor all that much.

I'm thinking of maybe just getting the mot done (along with the airbag light fixed), and move it on for £1,200 or so.

e; looks like I'm in dream land with £1,200, cars with 40,000 miles less and in better condition are only up for circa £900.

Went and quickly viewed the car today, it's very nice indeed however I didn't test drive it and am returning on Friday for this.

Car is due for cambelt change and I've got the dealership to agree to do this in the sale price so am happy to take it at asking due to this. Unfortunately they didn't have the service history present with the vehicle when I went to view so I've put a refundable deposit on the car to hold it until they can locate the paperwork to prove it's history. All being good with the history I'll test drive it and get a feel for the gearbox to ensure it's all good and then hopefully it will be mine :D

if its a 172 or 182 i would run away if they do the "cambelt".

they would do the bare minimum and use tipex, they WONT do the AUX cable or the Dephaser pully (they cost money)... And they WONT have the correct tools to do the job.

This will mean that you will have to have them redone in the future when the Dephaser starts getting noisy or you find the car down on power due to being timed up wrong.

Personally i would have them reduce the cost by £500 and get it done yourself.

Speaking of Diamond Motors, had a call from them today to say my 275 Cup-S is now on UK soil. Shouldn't be long before delivery

Woop woop!

The car is a 200.

Yeah they're all a doddle. Switched the two engines ones and gearbox one to powerflex. Vibrations will settle fairly quickly.

Never done it before but I would hazard a guess at not being able to correctly align the bolts without fully supporting the engine? Unless the other mounts are brand new and have no movement?

A little late to the party but to add to the list for future people I had my cambelt, aux. belt and dephaser done at 20Ten Racing just outside of Derby. It worked out cheaper than Diamond Motors.

The guy who did it builds/tunes their Clio Cup team's engines so he knows his stuff.

They also have their cars sat in the workshop if you want to go drool over them :D.
