I hope donuts were performed on those low grip areas ;)

Are the 2.5's as unreliable as the internet makes out?

They can be yes! Truth of the matter is, once they've had the head gasket done / forged pistons / remap they are fine.

Christ that is quick,

more info please.......

Scooby power bro ;) :D

Oil wise I used to use the Motul 300V 10W50, but thought it too thick for the winter so have Fuchs 10W40 in it at the moment.

Was at a Subaru dyno day on Saturday, couple of videos below:

Bit of mild anti lag:

Do these Type RA's really do 0-60 in 4 secs?

What other STI's have the same performance? Seems to be a few different types of STI's. Anything to know about these? How often do they need engine rebuilds? Costs to maintain?

Just looking into each car on my checklist. Would have an old scoobie but it is going to have to be Sonic Blue to catch my eye.

No not 4 seconds flat. But they're light, short geared and feel quick. The old Type RAs that is..

Newer ones you can get like the bugeye STi will do 0-60 in the 4sec range with a few mods.

Like all cars they need engine rebuilds when they break :p Costs to maintain an older STi are cheap. The brakes are small, the tyres are skinny, just give them good oil regularly and ensure that they're mapped and running correctly and they're very reliable cars.

It's a turbo charged performance car that is quite old now. People tend to rag them hard without warming them up etc. On top of that many of them run mods without having them mapped causing the issues also.

Don't be fooled because you hear of people killing the engines. The biggest killer on the old engines is the oil pump. Ensure it has been replaced/upgraded when the cambelt has been done and it won't be an issue.

You'll get a Blobeye STi for £6k - but it's going to be as the cost of mileage and overall condition. Definitely doable though.

Anybody know anything about the Subaru Impreza 2000 turbo? Things such as running costs, what needs replacing how often, common problems etc

Very reliable, normal car running costs to be honest. Biggest issue on the classics is the oil pump failure, rear arches rot a little bit too. Not a lot goes wrong on them otherwise if well maintained and not modified.

Too much hassle, rather just get a mint STI. Will only get one if i can find a nice sonic blue one.

Isn't the WRX a massive step down from the WRX STI? Especially in the bug/blob and hawk eye scoobs.

They do have a surprisingly different driving experience. Mainly because the newage WRXs are probably underpowered for their weight and the STi is about right but has the shorter ratios to help it feel more exciting!

A WRX with some simple mods, exhaust, air filter, remap & lowering springs is a completely different experience to a standard WRX. Feels so much more alive, but then again... so does the STi.

Had a lucky escape yesterday, noticed steam coming from the scoop on my way to work in the morning, had a look after work...the header tank was empty but that's not unusual for my car (had a few coolant problems). Topped the tank up, ran the engine and all seemed ok, did notice the engine was idling much faster than normal.

Halfway to my mechanic and the temp gauge keeps going up and up, I always keep 2ltr of tap water in the boot since my previous problems and that most probably saved my engine on this day, dumped all 2ltr in and made it to the garage as quickly as possible while trying to keep off boost.

The coolant hose entering the turbo had split so it was quick fix....I could just do without panic like this on a Friday. If you are in or near Darlington and want a mechanic, you can't go wrong with Darren at DLM!

List of coolant problems this car has been having my life with for the last couple of years; Heater matrix, radiator, turbo lower hose and turbo upper hose now...can't be much left to fail. It's an RB5 with forged 2ltr engine and TD05-20G, FMIC, old simtek etc

Glad you caught it in time, coolant leaks with these rubber pipes is all too common as the pipes get hard and crack easily.

I wouldn't run Carberry unless I had a lot of time/money to waste getting it right.

There's only 2 mappers (that I know of) that do Carberry officially. One of them is not Duncan ;)

I'm shocked, they are hopeless with modified cars.

They're really not that bad. I haven't exactly done much to mine either so if the car gets scrapped I'd literally only have to replace the suspension and exhaust and I'd be back near enough to where I am.

All the specialists laughed (literally) at me being 25 with an STi in Birmingham. Despite the 5+ years ownership.

Potentially.. breaking my car. I've decided I really want to start chucking cash away for a 2nd mortgage this year and I think that breaking my car will give me a good start and the best money back. Saves faffing with sale adverts also.

Not something I want to do really, but I don't want to keep the car and have it sat there doing nothing. By saving on insurance, fuel, tax, not doing track days, events etc then I can hopefully get where I want to be in a much shorter period of time. Doing this will also allow me to do a bit of wheeler dealing to try a few different cars, which can't be a bad thing after having owned Subarus for 9 years...

So if you can think of anything on my car that you may be interested in, then drop me a message. I'll likely put the breaking advert up in the second week of January on the usual Subaru places :)

Yes I do. I'll put your name next to them.

I won't be selling anything or taking anything out of the car until the gearbox and engine are sold though.

Let's try not to use this thread as a forum for the sale of my car bits though as it's against rules. Everything should be directed to my email in trust if interested please :)

I have the Peugeot for getting around or the wife's Fiat 500.

I'll likely be buying a few different things to have a sample of other motors though. The plan would be 2nd property with a good garage, then it's time to get back to cars.

I've been fortunate, I'm only 25 and couldn't ask for anything more from a car than what that STi has been for me. But right now I want to rent my flat out and buy a decent house. The cash injection from getting rid will definitely speed up the process.
