Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

I have a white MK7 Golf R, not sure if I ever posted pictures in here. It was APR Stage 2 with a Remus exhaust on it when I bought it, 404 BHP 423lb-ft torque and ridiculously loud. I stripped all the bits off and had it put back to APR Stage 1 instead so its around 360BHP now. Silly power for the money, not as fun or engaging to drive as my old EP3 Type R before hand though. I'm not keen on the kind of attention they attract but I currently live in an apartment with a gated car park and security cameras so its less of a concern.

I have been considering swapping to something more sensible but just can't bring myself to do it yet.

I think I said it somewhere on this site before but I'd agree about the EP3 too.

I just don't get the urge to throw it about in the corners also I'd trade in 8k+ rpm for dsg+fart.

I have had my R from new for almost a year and a half now and i wouldnt know what to change it to ? If i was to change , i would prolly get either another R albeit Mk7.5 , S3 or maybe a C43 ... any other suggestions welcome.

My lease is up at the end of the year and have been having the same dilemma.

See what price lease co want to buy this off them, extend lease for another year, get a new one or looks at something else like s3, s4, or second hand c43 or m3.

Yep that's exactly it, the Golf is fun in a straight line but I literally have to press a pedal and it does everything else for me. The EP3 fun factor will be hard to beat for me I think!

C43 sounds like a good option, or maybe an RS3?

Have considered a TT-RS, or do you need something more practical?

Although significantly less powerful, the S1 is great fun. Easily maps to over 300bhp as well.

Have been looking at the great deals to be had on the R once again to replace my daily workhorse. The other half isn't happy however as I'm not looking to sell my Evo 8. Would rather keep both lol. That way I'd be more comfortable with going with the DSG option, too.

What's the consensus on the manual gearbox? I need to test drive both ideally.

Lots of talk out there of the manual box having a weak clutch.

I have the Manual, the clutch is a weak point, plenty of upgrades available though.....

I just didnt get ANY enjoyment from the DSG box made the car boring in corners, didnt feel like i was engaged in the drive, all depends what you want/ like i guess... For me fun for a possible new clutch every so often is fine.

Yeah I'm with you on that, but for engagement, I'll still have the Evo so this is more of a gentleman's ******* for the daily commute and other things. That is my main concern with the DSG though, that it'll become boring very quickly.

The AYC issues put me off an Evo to be honest, possibly something over nothing but i don't find the new Evo's (7+) as nice to look as or as mean on the road.

That me having a very fussy personal view on them though, they drive amazing and you're right the engagement in those is tough to beat.

The DSG 'box in my ACT GT is brilliant, but it would take some fun away from an R without a doubt. However, as a commuting hack, the DSG makes more sense. Have a look at the S1. Manual-only, easy remap and it's an absolute hoot.

Mines a DSG and it is used for the commute mostly. Still finding quirks with the box even after owning it for some time. I still find it fun to go 'manual mode' and try to find the optimum shift point to make the loudest DSG fart :D

Mreh I had a brand new AYC pump fitted to mine in 2016. The main reason they fail is placement, as in the UK they just get hammered with dirt. Yeah, I thought about selling but I've put a lot of love into it and it's such a great car to drive! Just not in the UK winters with all the salt. The Golf would still get taken care of but won't be fussed about putting the miles on.

I did look at those not too long ago, as it goes. I'm already pushing my luck with the R, however lol.
