Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

Yeah its only £40 but it feels a bit barking doesn't it !
It is but then again, in 2017 I remember the map files being about 10-12GB, at the volumes they were dealing with, I expect the accountants put a stop to supplying 32GB cards for 10GB maps just for the benefit of whoever owns the car 6 or 7 years later when the files grew too big :p

So - it's brake replacement time. Bought the car just over 21k ago - the dealer putting on "new brakes", no doubt the cheapest possible. Fronts are now squealing like hell, so going to replace the lot. Any recommendations for disc/pad combos? TIA :)

I have this kit on my GTI, (along with Hel braided lines and RFB 660 fluid) very pleased with the results. Did a day at Anglesey and they held up really well. Much, much better than the stock set up. I posted about it in the thread.

Got a set of Protrack Ones, test fitted last night to make sure they fit as they are 18X9 ET52 so a bit more chunky than the Santiago's.
Will have them ceramic coated before they go on the car. I got them from CP Performance during Black Friday, but due to delays, Christmas and coming from Germany they have only just arrived. Love how they look!

Thanks mate - I've got the smaller discs (312mm), but have ordered a new set along with some EBC redstuff pads.

Ah, no performance pack. Fair enough, they do a bundle for your brakes too I think.
Was looking at those, but have just gone with new disks and pads for now. Needed sooner! But in the summer I may put some braided lines on - I'll inspect the current ones when I do the brakes. Current ones are perfectly sufficient for my general usage.

Nice one... Goodyear AS6?

I remember you having these before. At what winter temps do you feel the grip starting to fall off and when do they really fall off?

Yes AS6, had them before the CSC7's I am currently running. IMO, on that car, for me they can't be beaten. Unless I get a set of AD09's or something!

Tbh they were very good pretty much all the time. I can't remember specifically, but they were always very confidence inspiring.

Finally got myself organised and headed to P&M Performance in Birmingham to get a load of preventative maintenance items done that were discussed further back.

I met Naz early doors on Sunday and as soon as he opened the shutters I could see they were what I would call "a proper garage". Naz's project Micra with a high comp K24 build was nestled in the corner.

There was a variety of other very cool build cars in there - several were customer cars, so I didn't take pictures of those in the spirit of discretion. Suffice to say one was a very impressive S2000 Turbo so I was suitably interested from my life before marriage and kids. I also had a peek at the fabrication work on the exhaust manifold for a 500bhp Leon K1 they were building - it was incredible.

So, onto my car. A variety of pictures follow.... yes, I am useless at photography, but lets blame my potato cam.

Rocker cover off, cams looking pretty decent for 183k I'd say...

Cam Chain off, when set to TDC there was quite a decent amount of movement through chain stretch. I stupidly didnt' fire up VCDS beforehand to see just how bad it had got, but I was reassured I was doing the right thing...

Sump and oil pickup off. It wasn't too bad, but there was some minor blockage on the mesh of the pickup. In my excitement of watching Naz I didn't take a photo of this.

Quick blast in the parts washer - looking much healthier !

Before and after fitting of the VIS balance shaft delete....

And finally the worst 'I've got Koni Special Active Dampers and forgot to take a picture when they were new and clean a few months ago' picture ever.

Car ended up with Millers 10w40 NT+ CFS oil. So, same stuff I'm running in my 987.1 but not 10w50.

The drive home was unsurprisingly pretty sedate with standing water on the M42 and M5 constantly - impressive that some people don't have lights on and think 90mph and an inch of the car in front is OK in such conditions - but I would risk saying the car feels much smoother and quieter .... Maybe thats in my imagination, but I certainly don't regret doing this preventative maintenance work.

We didn't manage to get the Walnut blasting of intake & Injector testing/ cleaning done this time, so I need to head up again soon. if anyone needs work done on these cars, well worth giving them a nudge.

Thanks bud. I'm basically in 2 minds whether to stick with all seasons or not that's all. Though I prefer the look the AS6.

I'll give the AS6 a go.

Traded in my Jag XF for something more sensible and family-friendly last week. I'm pretty happy with it so far, a different beast to the Jag, less wafting, but certainly more fun - back to manually changing the gears again is a novelty. It's pretty much standard 7.5 spec, and as such I was worried that the stock stereo would be a massive disappointment, especially compared to the Jags 825W Meridian system. However, I've been pleasantly surprised by it. Overall I'm glad I've made the change and it doesn't feel that much slower than the Jag, if anything it feels faster which is weird because on paper it isn't. First things to do, change the awful ditchfinders, and get the cambelt/waterpump done.

How are you finding these? I have been recommended them for my Caravelle, and thought I might see what they are like on the R also. But never really seen any feedback for them. So would be interested in your thoughts.

I've found them absolutely excellent. Important to note, I'm comparing against what I think were the original front and rear OEM dampers with 180k miles on.

It feels genuinely decent on the back roads now, it firms up brilliantly when pushing on.

Could I pedal the car as fast as my 987.1 Cayman S? I doubt it. Can I have plenty of fun in it but it be absolutely excellent around town on our awful roads? absolutely.

I'll be honest, that's not what I had in mind when I read your message saying you're collecting one! Love it.
