Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

Just got myself the "R8 Red" Coilpacks, a cam follower kit and the GFB DV+ for some preventative maintenance. If anyone has any suggested guides to follow would be great :)

Right, a handful of photos from tonights endeavour.

Arrived at my friends house to fit the GFB DV+, r8 Coilpacks, and replacement of the Cam Follower.

He's a bit of a dab hand with a spanner. One of his rally school Impreza's up on stands next to the trusty Golf. I realised he also has enough spare parts dotted around to build another Mk2 Escort.

First up was the Diverter Valve

Do not underestimate this clip on the back with the sensor. It took far too long (like, an hour) to get the thing to come off. I would invest in the right tool to do it, mine appeared to be jammed on.

Rebuilding the DV with the GFB parts was painless, and on that went.

I was pretty confident the issue I had with boost was the DV, but I'd been recommended to swap out the coil packs for the R8 type, and the Cam Follower.

The cam follower.... the banjo bolt that holds on one of the fuel pipes into the fuel pump was a bit of a beast to get to - fiddly. I'd recommend a ratchet spanner that has pop in Allen/hex/torx/etc parts to make your life easy.

So, did this work?

Yes. It feels much better, which makes me thing the DV was on the way out before my remap. The car now has a very deliberate 'sclurp' noise from 1500 ish to 2750 ish RPM. The car feels really smooth and responsive now. Highly recommend this maintenance.

The cam follower I understand but why the R8 coilpacks and GFB DV - when I had my S3 I just used the standard DV / coilpacks and had no issues?

Get it down to R-Tech for a nice map :D

Speaking of R-Tech....

I was already 2+ but returned recently for a map revision with an anti-surge core and a stronger actuator, hoping to avoid the turbo surge lower down. I made +11hp but the diffference in volume of torque and at a lower RPM is crazy. No more DSG farts unless WOT is a welcome change, too.

I will never buy a DSG equipped car. I’ve heard so many horror stories like this that I’m out off for life!
13 months in and touch wood <touches my head> mines been fine, 69k 2014 Golf R. Afaik not servicing them or not doing it properly doesn't help. Absolutely lovely to drive imo and so quick to change gear, it's convinced me that I don't care if I don't have a manual again if auto's can be as good as this.

How many miles @rhysduck? My 2015 GTI-PP is now on 130,000 miles, still going strong (pls don't let me tempt fate!) Had the DSG oil changed every 40k as per service schedule. Worst thing I've had/got right now is a dodgy oil sensor telling me to check the oil, but thankfully have an actual dipstick so know its fine and just a sensor fault. (Btw, any guides on replacing one of those?)

Mine died at 64k. Full VW service history.
Flashed the car to a previous software version to hide the fault and sold it to wbac. I'd still have another though. Think I was unlucky.
I'm not so sure. I know of three people personally that have had DSG issues including one who spend £1,500 on repairs at various specialists only to be told it couldn't be repaired and needed a replacement whole gearbox at £3,000 for a second hand one. The car got scrapped as they couldn't afford that on top of the £1,500 they'd already spent.

My 2017 Golf R (310) is getting part-ex'd tomorrow, mainly because it's got some big bills coming and even though VW replaced the DSG gearbox due to a recall about 20k miles ago, this one is already showing signs of it not being happy - gets stuck in 1st occasionally, sometimes won't change up when it should, manual changes are instant one minute and 'sludgy' the next. It was a bit of a dog when I bought it, got it fully sorted mechanically and onto the VW all-in plan but now it's no longer eligible for due to age.

I'll miss the car, it was superb when it didn't have faults.

My Mk7 GTI had a major service, Diff service and MOT this week, sailed through, clean bill of health and 0 advisories. :D

Currently sat at 69k so I'll get the DSG service done soon, way before the 80k interval. Mines stage one engine and gear box and its not missed a beat.

New wheel speed sensor after dash lit up like Chernobyl. New rear caliper as it was seized and hot as Chernobyl. Oh and new door lock as the drivers door one gave up and would not lock. DSG service due in 12k but also will be done sooner.

A smidge under 70k or so.
I feel for ya!

Which model and mileage?
GTI - ~70k - box was serviced at 40k by VW. No signs of it going at all :( VW Tech that came to recovery tried to isolate 2nd clutch (amongst other things) but had no joy. He was stumped!

Despite the issue, which is bad luck... I'd have another one in a heartbeat!

Nice! My stage 1 2014 MK.7 R has never had an MOT fail or even an advisory :D love the car, just a joy to drive, even slowly :D

Glove box out and new blower and repair to fuse box and back to having climate control again. Also trying some WAGO inline connectors for the dash cam wiring and they hold the wire rock solid. Got some crimp butt connectors if I have ussues with them

about to tick over to 181k miles on my Mk5 GTI now. Just done a suspension refresh and gone for Koni Special Active dampers on the stock GTI springs.

Getting a 4 wheel alignment done tomorrow, but initial impressions are good. Highly recommend them.
