Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

My 66 Plate Golf R which I have had from new has passed its 8th year service along with a clean MOT since the 3rd year onwards. Happy about that. Still not remapped or done anything silly to it. Does need some new tyres next year for sure.

Got my eye on a GTI performance so started reading this thread, lots of posts about things going wrong in general, so my question is are they a decent buy? It's a 2016 manual, like the look of these and from what I have read seem to handle well and 240hp will be enough, just concerned about VW reliability. I've had Japanese cars most of my driving life and never done any research on anything else....

I was looking at Golf R -Gti, opted for a 245 Octavia vrs which has the same upgraded bits as the Gti performance, so the 340mm brakes and the LSD. Absolutely fantastic car.

As for reliability, about 8months into ownership some dowel pins had come out of the flywheel and punctured slave cylinder, but all was replaced under warranty. 4yrs in and around 35k miles, its been absolutely fine other than that.

2016 DSG here, and its ben fantastic, done a few bits to it, all in this thread, great car.

Did 2200 miles road trip to Scotland and back and didn't miss a beat.

I would like a 7.5 TCR now though... :o

Owned a Cupra Ateca, then an R Estate, and now a Model Y Performance. Loved both the Cupra and the R. The Model Y is a great tool, but zero personality.

Took a half decent picture today. Need to lower it a touch I think with the new wheels.

They do look better a bit lower, and some spacers. Mine is on Eibach springs, 12mm front and 16mm rear Forge spacers.

At the Kylesku Bridge a couple of weeks ago....
(please forgive the general filth and brake dust covered wheels!)

I don't think I'll need spacers. The ET40 from the genuine RS4 wheels is pretty aggressive as is. Maybe a touch too aggressive to be honest.

Ballpark figure if this happens to a dsg box?
Just over £4k on mine (about 5ish years ago) that also failed at 60k for a brand new DSG gearbox installed at specialist indi garage.. They are rare to fail and considering how many are on the roads and 'touch wood' had zero issues since with the dox. Still love my GTI and just done 130k and nothing else I want at the moment.

£1500 all in. Used box with 45k on it (mine had done just over 65k ish), new oil and filter, recode to car. I really struggled to find anywhere that would even look at the box!

about to tick over to 181k miles on my Mk5 GTI now. Just done a suspension refresh and gone for Koni Special Active dampers on the stock GTI springs.

Getting a 4 wheel alignment done tomorrow, but initial impressions are good. Highly recommend them.
Thought I'd update this.

Had the alignment done. Its excellent. The ride quality now is superb, and it feels really tight and focused when pushing on. Absolutely ideal and incredibly cheap.
