Done a 1000 miles in the ST TDCI and what a great car it is. I think I have a dead spot in the steering :/. Other than that it drives faultless and I like the overtaking ability. Ride isn't too bad, I'll be giving the wheels a refurb as they're corroded a little.

The problem with the bumpers is not in fact that the foam blocks were removed and whilst these help a little, they don't really solve the problem long term. The problem arises because the pre 2005 ST220's and very early ST TDCi's used an ST specific rear crash beam which also supported the bumper. You can just see it in the pictures of the silver car on here - http://www.fordwiki.co.uk/index.php?title=Dropping_Rear_Bumper_Fix&redirect=no

The blue saloon is a 2007 car and you can see the massive top section of the crash beam was replaced with a crappy bit of white of plastic to support it around the bootlid.

The best way to sort the bumper out once and for all is to very gently jack it up, using at least 2 jacks and making sure the sides are level and use screws and washers to attach it to the crash beam like this: http://www.stdrivers.co.uk/forum/topic/19528-rear-bumper-pics-screws/. Use a decent HSS drill bit with a drop of oil on the end - the crash beam is hard but I got through it with an 18V cordless drill.

I had a bumper replaced under warranty at about 18 months old, it had started to drop after about 3 years, since I added the screws it didn't move at all and felt much more solid.

So guys what do you lot think this could be....

When changing gear i get a clonk.. If i come off the accelaration and back on very quickly, i can get it to clonk.

In need of new GB oil? Gearbox mount? Engine mount? Wishbone, CV joints? I guess the list is endless...

What we guessing?

Ahh joy. Last night it wouldn't start the battery didn't have enough juice to turn the engine over :( I got a jump start and everything was rosy.

I think I can explain the reasons its last service was on 24/11/2012 at 68595 miles. I picked it up on 70950 so in the 6 months its done very little miles maybe all short journeys or its not been used for weeks on end. I reckon this is resonable cause for the battery to go flat.

Alas I will stick it on charge and see how we get on afterwards.

The next point whilst having a poke around the engine bay identifying all the relevant bits for my knowledge when it comes to servicing I did look underneath the car and see a covering of oil all over the sump, oil filter, a bit on the gearbox area and on the subframe :(

I will give everything a clean up, ensure oil filter is tight run the engine see if there is any visible leaking if not drive it then check again.

Looking on STdrivers it could be sump gasket, rear crank seal, front crank seal. Rear crank seal is a gearbox out job I believe which isn't cheap. I do have a basic RAC warranty with the car doubt its worth the paper its written on though.

That looks like the inside of a dirty factory :)

My ST220 had a similar leak when I picked it up. It was just a seal but was a lot of labour as it was a gearbox out job I think. Fortunately noticed it before I took ownership and the garage stumped up the cost to fix.
