I'm still trying to track down an incredibly annoying rattle on mine emanating from what sounds like to be behind the dashboard/below the windscreen. It does it while driving along normally, and you can make it click/creak by shaking the car gently from side to side with the steering wheel while driving.

It sounds like plastic rubbing on plastic and it sounds like it's coming from toward the passenger side and probably underneath at the back of the dashboard. But as is usually the case with these noises, I could be completely wrong.

I've had the glovebox out and been under there and had a poke around as much as humanly possible and taped up loose bits of wire and sprayed bits with silicone grease and all sorts.

The centre vent (with the little round climate control sun-load sensor in) creaks a bit when touched but grabbing hold of it or moving it doesn't stop or affect the rattle.

I did think it might be something 'external' and I've had a look at the springs and they seem fine. It sounds like plastic on plastic rubbing, not like the metallic rattle I could hear through the dash when my brake pads were rattling. I haven't taken out the wheel arch linings and looked behind them yet. I'm slowly working my way round dismantling the entire car :D

My latest thinking is it *might* be something like an ARB drop link (they're made of plastic) or a suspension top mount, but I'm not so sure.

Driving me potty though and I will get to the bottom of it!

Does it do it when the car is stationary?

No so guess that takes out the oil bit. Just been going up and down my cul-di-sac and it isn't making any noise at the moment. Will do on my way to work though.

I am going with one of the mounts. So i will get them checked next time i fancy going to my mates garage.

Just cleaned the underside best I can without degreaser, there were no visible oil spots on the road and the oil level hasn't moved so if it is in fact leaking it I don't think its much.

I went to start it to check for visible leaks and its dead once again so I'm off to buy a battery charger.

For those knowledgeable folk regarding used cars and dealers if I can prove a oil leak exists what are my next actions? Contact the dealer, contact RAC warranty people. Also in the event that the warranty doesn't cover it fully am I entitled to any compensation from the dealer?

As a last resort do I have the right to reject the car?

You've had the car, what, less than a week, so if it's a half decent dealer they should be receptive enough with your problem and help you out. Just go in firmly but fairly and politely, stating that you believe this oil leak to have existed prior to you buying the car and you'd like them to repair it under warranty. You can cite the Sale of Goods Act if need be.

So guys what do you lot think this could be....

When changing gear i get a clonk.. If i come off the accelaration and back on very quickly, i can get it to clonk.

In need of new GB oil? Gearbox mount? Engine mount? Wishbone, CV joints? I guess the list is endless...

What we guessing?

I had that exact noise and it was the exhaust knocking on the steering rack

I managed to get a sound clip that quite accurately portrays the rattle/creak.

Turn the volume up loud, and listen from 10 seconds in.

I also sat in the passenger seat and had a crawl around whilst being driven to see if I could localise it - pretty sure it's not coming from the actual dashboard, but I then took the nearside front wheel off and had a poke around under there and couldn't feel anything make the noise :(

Grr :(

Not something such as a brake hose or ABS line knocking on the wheel arch? Had a similar sound on my GF's Punto and turned out to be that. I'd suggest dropping the glove box and cable tieing anything you can see secure if it's coming from that area.

£7.5k is almost certainly far too expensive unless it's in showroom condition, especially seeing as you'll be paying £450 or whatever per year to tax it at that age.

Thanks thought that might be the case

Not seen many st220s for sale in my local area for sale the last 6 months

This one is from a independent ford specialist with ford protect warranty

I guess that and low mileage has bumped the price

So its still dead :(

Cause is a duff battery, charged it up took only a matter of minutes which was strange. So I tested the voltage of the battery and surely it said 12.6V

It did start the car without issue however the next day it was dead again. My next thought was something draining it.

So I charged it up again and did a parasitic drain test. The initial connection to the multimeter spikes the amps at 2.5 - 3 whilst the car wakes up about 10 seconds later they settle to 0.30 another 10 seconds are so 0.09 - 0.10 after another minute it settles at 0.01 - 0.02 which is perfectly fine.

So its new battery time. I believe this is considered a service part and will come under wear and tear and it is the original battery from 2005 so I don't think the dealer will cover this cost. However if you don't ask you don't get so I will try tomorrow.

My battery died suddenly last year. When I got a new one the starter motor cranked the engine over so much faster, the old battery must have been knackered.
