Whos getting BOTTAS' seat next year ?

Wasn't said in qualifying today about the Albon to Williams rumour, and Crofty said apparently Toto isn't happy about that will try to stop any move. Or something to that extent.
So Toto and Mercedes aren't against Albon personally, it's about him going to Williams while still being part of the Red Bull stable and potentially learning things about the Mercedes Power Unit that he can then report back to Christian and the RB Engine team, even though development is supposed to be frozen, or if he finds out Mercedes are running some sort of device that cheats as RB say they are now, or that Ferrari were in 2019. They and he would be quite happy for Alex to get the seat if he is released or removes himself from the Red Bull stable.

Reverse the situation and imagine George Russell still being a Mercedes young Driver but going to drive for Red Bull. Would Horner be OK with that? You can bet yer arse he wouldn't be!

If that was true Lewis would have already signed for McLaren ;)

That's the point no one will know until the new cars hit the track for the first race of the season. I think if Lewis wins this year and the Mercedes will not compete he will retire at the end of his current contract.

Also for all we know Williams could make a peach of a car and Russell could have egg on his face going to a Mercedes that struggles.

McLaren was a mid car pack before the rule change in 1998 and Honda were back markers before the 2009 rules change so it has happened before.

By hiring the best designer in the business, and pairing it with a very good engine.

They had Mercedes power in 1996 and 97 and finished both 4th. Yes Newey was and is a god but it still doesn't change the fact that the rule change reset the standard which McLaren made the best of.

You're basically saying that McLaren would have still got the same result by simply hiring Newey.

Newey didn't design the '97 car, that was designed by Oatley and Nichols while he was on enforced gardening leave from Williams. Worth noting that his input had them running more competitively from after the summer break.

The Merc engine wasn't that reliable in 96/97. Hakkinen retired from the lead of a couple of races mid-season '97. Last few races they were pretty competitive and got some good results when the engines held together. Jerez was a slightly fluky win, after the Schumacher incident though.
