Whos getting BOTTAS' seat next year ?

They had Mercedes power in 1996 and 97 and finished both 4th.
The Mercedes in 1997 was woefully unreliable as they were deliberately focussing on performance for 1998 and beyond. They lost a dominant 1-2 at the Nurburgring with both retiring with engine failure during an ITV ad-break. Hakkinen was on course to win at Silverstone too and might have won at Hungary as well but for an early retirement. Adding to their wins in Australia and Italy (and ignoring the Jerez result).

They were ranked 4th in the championship, but were easily the 3rd fastest team and not all that far behind the leading duo for much of the year.

Newey might have turned them into the team to beat, but they were getting up towards the top already.

Since when were you interested in facts?

We all know its going to happen; but it would be hilarious if Merc confirmed someone else alongside Hamilton at this point

Mazepin?

I think this is great for everyone.. Except possibly Hamilton and an easy dynamic for merc.

There's more than a chance Russell could displace Hamilton quickly. Or at least contest more than bottas.
Equally, it gives Hamilton a chance to prove himself against a (hopefully) competitive team mate like with alonso.

It could have course work for merc. If Russell plays the team game well merc have a better line up than RBR if Russell performs as expected.

Can't wait. I'm no Hamilton lover or hater. So whatever the result its more exciting than another bottas year.

Also hope bottas does well at alfa. I do like bottas. But he clearly isn't Hamilton. Hopefully he can do a gasley and lead that team and get away from the number 2 comments.

So the statement was made, it was daft ever putting it off it's not like it changed anything and everyone knew anyway. I doubt the contract was only just signed in last couple of hours. Mercedes taking the public for idiots again.

It's a decent record considering he's up against one of the greatest of all time in the same equipment. Merc got exactly what they needed in a good solid number 2 driver that'd run Hamilton close, but not close enough to trigger civil war in the team like the last couple of Rosberg seasons, whilst mopping up all the silverware.

You don't have to convince me of Lewis`s talent. Been a fan since his McLaren days. I had simply not paid close attention to how few races Valteri had won.
To be fair, in other circumstances, it would be a great career.
As you say, he has been the perfect number 2.

Why would a driver from a team that’s won 8 WCC/WDC in the recent past want to drive for Alfa?

Don’t tell me he’s spent all the money Mercedes have paid him over the last 5 years?

When you're in a career that effectively forces you into at least a partial retirement by your mid to late 30s, you'd be mad not to maximise your earnings for as long as possible. Driving for Alfa for a few seasons will be better than not driving at all.
