Who's got the Hottest 8800GT

Hi,

When I've sold my 7800GT ;) I shall be purchasing a 8800GT but going by the post I can see the temps being a problem in my case, could someone recommend a after market cooler that will offer cooling for the ram chips as well as the core?

Thx,
ManC

Accelero S1 comes with ramsinks and will cool it passively.

On stock cooling mine hit 96c at one point during Crysis... now it barely reaches 45-46 overclocked with the S1+120mm fan.

Thanks guys, i've now put the ramsinks on the card. I was worried that they would be difficult to remove if the card did die later on but they seem a bit flimsy tbh. I think they'll probably stay on as long as the pc doesn't get a real heavy jolt.

Didn't know that fitted, interesting stuff!

Yep, no problems, took 10 minutes to fit it... excluding cutting up a VRM heatsink with a dremel :p but I wouldn't worry, that isn't necessary unless you don't have a couple of ramsinks laying around.

yeah i think it was their desire to make it single slot for marketing puposes. Unfortunately it doesnt do a good enough job of cooling imo.

I have an Accelero S1 + 120mm silent fan on my x1950pro, glad it fits the 8800gt i was thinking about getting one but i just heard the power draw for the 3800 series is only 110 watts plus it has power saving tech when in 2D mode, If they perform good those electricity savings could tempt me.

Interesting and a shame nvidia have put such a terrble cooler on the card.

Nothing wrong with the stock fan, you just need to use rivatuner to change fan speeds at certain temps, mine hits 50% at 60c and never goes above 75c and is still reasonably quite, stock fan speeds are probably still only doing 30% at 80c.

i heard the 8800gt was 200 watts under load? I'm waiting to see what the 3800 series does in power/performance/price and decide then. I know the x1950 is low thats one of the reasons i got it.

im really interested to see what the mobile tech does for the 3800s in 2d mode, my pc is on a lot downloading etc so the card is idle, rumours are the card is clocked down in 2d mode for extra power savings , that really appeals to me

You did put some heatsink on the VRMs right?

Well you must have heard wrong ;) the official figure is 105w according to Nvidia. In some reviews the entire system only used around 275 watts under load (Guru3d for example).

The power usage is lower than a 320mb 8800GTS, they're pretty good really.

mine was 91 during crysis on stock cooling.

now I installed the fan profiles from rivatuner, and it doesnt get above 68 with fan on 80%
