Who's in to electric RC cars?

We had a large bash out a Bawsey a few weeks back, took some video if anyone is interested, there is a nice Losi 5 / Baja crash about 3/4 of the way in.

I know there is a youtube thread but thought it would be more appropriate for posting here as it is the RC car thread!

Great vid, did you pop down with the msuk guys? I've was hoping to try that place out with my Savage Flux.

Yes mate, it was a joint 3 group meet up with Lincs / Bawsey bashers and the msuk guys. Well worth going, that area I filmed was just next to the car park but there is a better area just next door with plenty of ruts and mounds etc and very sandy.

Well I saw this the other day and it got me thinking whatever happend to the nitro car I swopped my buddy my bmx for? I found it (id only used it once) and naturally bought a ton of parts to fix it within 10 minutes....

I want to ask though can anyone give me a hand? I remember cracking off 2 teeth on my spur the 1 time i used it can you get any spur gear to fit any car? its a Kyosho pureten (the one they did in the magazines). im naturally wanting to replace it with a metal one of course to prevent this.

Sweet cars by the way guys love the old lunchbox's (yes I realize this is an old thread so probably wont see a reply)

Wow ! I have just watched the vids DreXeL posted further up the thread and those electric buggies are a LOT faster now than when I used to do it in the 80's. I mean I know times have changed and all that but it's a huge difference.

How long does the battery last these days? I used to get roughly eight minutes of use and then it was a fifteen minute fast charge before you was ready to roll again.

its not an old thread :) i only posted in this the other day lol, went out today and picked up these

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/fusion-5ive-nx82-delta-peak-dual-output-charger/rc-car-products/32524

and this

http://www.arrowmodels.com/voltz-3000mah-7-2v-nimh-stick-pack-with-tamiya-connector

that battery is going to be a lot better than the one i got with it, which is an 1800 pack, will be using that as a backup, as the charger unit supports charging 2 batteries at once

but it doesn't support charging lipo's :D

I need to read the whole thread later!!

I used to race '89-'93 and later on '04-'05. Spent pretty much everything I had on it and is one of the best times in my life. I have almost no photos from back then but here's my first car when it retired in '93 (I think none of the parts remain from the original Yokomo YZ10 Dogfighter).

Those 10th buggies were wiiiide back then!

Would love to do it again but I have too much other stuff in my life now :(

That's the beauty of brushless motors and LiPo batteries, they are a world away from the brushed motors and ni-cd/NiMH batteries of old. 40-50+ mph is the norm for half-decent brushless motor/LiPo battery combos, and 70mph isn't uncommon.

Run time is dependent on lots of different factors, but I get around 20-30 mins out of my 5000mah LiPo in my Hyper SC.

Whilst I'm in this thread, here's my latest toy, a Tamiya Midnight Pumpkin re-release, bought one because I've always wanted another since having an original one as a teen, in fact it was my first hobby-class RC, so when Modelzone had them at £40 I couldn't resist:

Stock apart from 5th shock mod. Was just as much fun as I remember to build and drive even with the stock silvercan, but over the weekend I decided to throw my 13.5t EZRUN (which is a 'mild' brushless combo) into it:

It's great, loads of power but not so much it's uncontrollable, it's actually a great match for the MP and doesn't detract away from the simple fun at all, the comedy handling isn't pushed beyond being fun even though it has much more power than the silvercan. Such a hoot, I love it :)

Wow !! 20 -30 mins at that speed, they certainly have improved.

The only time I got 20 mins of run time was with a standard Holiday Buggy (360 motor) and a brand new 6v battery that had been slow charged :)

I remember back in the day me and a mate done some pretty crazy things with ours. We once put 2 of the 7.2v battery packs in a Tamiya Frog. The run time was a few minutes and that was on totally flat tarmac, it was obviously fast too but even then I don't think it was as fast as yours DreXeL.

How long to fast charge your 5000mah LiPo battery?

Old thread but I didnt want to start a new one.

Just got back into this hobby again after 20 yrs out. Bought a DEX210 kit and been building it slowly. Got a new geared diff as I'm not over the moon with the ball diff, so we'll see how it works out today.

Im really keen to get a good tamiya to build. Ive had my fair share of Cats, Dogfighters etc, but I do enjoy the build of a tamiya.

Anyone recommend good sites for getting kits?

I used Modelsport, MBModels, JEModels and Apex too... any others I'm missing out on?

Things have moved on. Tamiya is definitely the 'toy' brand for RC cars. Many are of the opinion, myself included, that they are plastic tat.

Hobby grade RC cars are so much better. The Team Durango stuff is very nice, but really designed for racing with. If you are wanting to bash I would get a bashing car - something that is not all carbon fiber ett. JE Models and Modelsport are your best bet for cars via postal service. They are competitive and priced well. BMM do a wide selection of parts and upgrades. Wheelspin models is ok, but beware as a lot of their stock is shadow and can take weeks to arrive.

I never use Apex, heard some bad things.

Kits wise you will be limited as most cars now come as race rollers or RTR. Also you will be spending upwards of £350 for most pro kits. That is without any electrics/engine or RC gear.

If you intend to race, maxbashing forum has a lot of ex race cars for sale in their classified sections. MSUK forum also has a lot of 2nd hand kit going too. Obviously buyer beware.

I would decide on what you want to do with your RC cars and take it from there. Also what budget you have is important.

I currently have a Losi 8ight 2.0 T e-project in bits. Will get around to building it at some point!

The two forums above are great places for info, although maxbashing tends to cater for the more race orientated side of the hobby, despite the name :)

Seeing as you bought the DEX I would assume you want electric cars?
