Who's in to electric RC cars?

I have really enjoyed reading this thread and it has me interested in buying a new toy. I have been reading a few things on the web and I like the look of the electric
Traxxas Rustler VXL Brushless Stadium Truck RC 2.4. Would that be a good one to go for, plus I am unsure on nitro or electric as the best option?

There really is no definitive answer to that question, depends on circumstances and personal preference.

Electric is quieter, easier to just get up and go with and less messy but some people prefer the smell and sounds of a nitro. If you want to use it near houses I would go electric. People don't appriciate a nitro screaming around outside their house lol.

I have both types and probably prefer nitro when I take it to a local bashing place which is in a forest but if Im playing out the front of the house with my lad we use the electrics only.

Drukk, I think mostly I would be using it with my boy in the local streets and car parks, I like the idea of off-road but whenever I try it I seem to enjoy tarmac more so I think it would be good to have one that can do both like the one I mentioned.
I also bought my son a Baja Champ a few years ago which he dusted off tonight and we are wondering if it can be upgraded to be a lot faster?

If you want fast you might be better going for a 4 wheel drive car like the 1/16 e-revo vxl which can also be easily be converted into a rally/drift car version which I use in the street with my kid.
I have the Traxxas Ken Block vxl and have the parts to basicly convert it to the e-revo when I want some field action.

If you are going down the 2wd stadium truck route the HPI Firestorm Flux is a better option than the Rustler. Not that the Rustler is a bad truck, but the Firestorm has a reputation for being much tougher and more durable. Stick on a set of T-bone bumpers and they become pretty much indestructible :D

Rustler VXL is very good, bashed one of those for a whole summer and it withstood just about everything. Also have a revo 1/16 VXL, out of the 2 the mini revo is slightly cheaper to buy and being 4wd easier to drive and doesnt get through tyres so quick. Once you fit the centre diff upgrade (£15) and a 3s lipo (£10) you done. You can run it on the 2 x stock NIMH batteries and its still plenty fast.

The rustler costs a bit more initially and a 3s battery (that fits) will be about £30-50, plus rear tyres are about £20 a pair.

Revo VXL, box stock with the 2 x nimh (really needs the centre diff to tame the wheelies) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkXtcCIuUxY&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

I only have my Tamiya Clod buster left these days. Been there and done that with the nitro trucks, custom crawlers, elec-cars and 50mph + brushless set ups.

I still enjoy the Clod more than anything else I have ever had and I have been playing with decent RC since I was 5.

I do have an elec speed controller and superstock BZs in it (cut the timing pin on one so it has adjustable timing since one runs flipped in reverse). I am currently refreshing the bodyshell with a new re-finish as well.

It is a good truck, but there's just no reason to buy one over a Firestorm flux. They are both very similar, but the Firestorm has the edge when it comes to durability.

firestorm vs slash always ends up beeing the argument in the whats the most durable out of the box 200quid car threads on rc forums :D

i drove my slash 40mph into a kerb and did no damage at all :D apart from i had to re centre the steering arm.

i wouldnt buy traxxas again though they have no european suport and wouldnt replace my dead servo in a 1week old slash unless i sent them the servo to america at my expense... i could buy a servo in the uk for almost the same amount of money it would cost to post them the damn thing.......

I think I'm pretty much sold on the Revo VXL :D. Looks awesome fun. In one review the guy was saying the stock shocks were not up to scratch and could do with stiffer ones. Would that be a cheap upgrade?

Would it be possible to use my own 2 stick controller in place of the included wheel controller? I have never used a wheel one, so don't know if i will get on with it. Then again almost every RTR kit I see has a wheel controller included, so they can't be bad.

Its not about stiffer shocks, you want better ones, the standard ones will start leaking.
Im running Traxxas GTR shocks with tan springs on the front and black on the rear with 80wt at the back and 60wt at the front.
Green or gold springs and 60wt all round will probably work fine for a standard car.

You wont be able to use your stick controller, its a matched 2.4ghz system so you would need to replace the receiver as well.
I would suggest getting some 2s or 3s LIPO batteries as well, as NIMH is pretty rubbish compared.

They have a good section for the micro cars on the modelsport forums,
