why all the hate for hs2?

And thats what HS2 is, a waste of money.
Given the current government propensity for wasting money (looking at all those dodgy covid contracts) when their mates benefit one can only deduce that the Tories have no friends who make high speed railways or the margins aren't good enough to make being billions over budget worth it for their own pockets

I do agree that HS2 is now a waste of money though given the benefits would have only really been realised in the Northern section, which isn't going to exist

will be interesting to see if there are protests outside the conference centre, or whether Keir can gain any political capital,
he's evidently not doing anything proactive.

[ devil has all the best tunes from today

The law-abiding …
Hard working …
Common sense majority.
Against the few …
the privileged woke minority …
… with their luxury beliefs …
… who wield influence out of all proportion to their numbers.

The British people have no enthusiasm for Keir Starmer.
They know that he believes in nothing …
That he will say anything to anyone … And then change his mind at the first sign of trouble.
Keir Starmer lacks the force of personality to lead this country effectively.
Imagine what would happen if he became prime minister.
Luxury beliefs would reign supreme.
Britain would go properly woke

There’s some very nice disused railways walks around, I particularly enjoyed the Monsal Trail in Derbyshire. Hopefully the expected decision tomorrow will be the beginning of the end of HS2 - and at least we’ll get somewhere to walk the dog or ride the bikes. Fingers crossed.

They can turn Old Oak Common into an actual common too!

The UK looks like a joke, can't do Heathrow runway, nor nuclear projects, now a rail project is getting canned... yet we want to consider ourselves an infrastructure powerhouse of Europe!? Pah! :D :D :D They're on another planet. We look pathetic to the rest of the world.

Instead of the vanity project of having the fastest trains in Europe of 400km/h, we should have stuck to 300km/h like HS1, and therefore we'd have the tried and tested experience, just needs a bit more modernising, and we'd have been able to take it to the north and scotland. In fact they should have started at Manchester and moved towards Leeds and Birmingham.

Our current fastest trains that go N/S are around 200km/h - so already 300km/h would have been an improvement.
The UK *is* a joke. A very bad joke.

And the electorate is a large part of the reason. So many people vote based on conspiracy theories, Daily Mail wind-ups, and outright lies peddled by political parties.

The country is a mess because many of the voters are thick as ****.

The Tories are even adopting some of the conspiracy theories once they become popular enough. See the current talk (from Tory MPs) about "scrapping 15-minute cities and council plans to use CCTV to force you to stay at home".

Country is doomed, seriously.

It's not in his nature to do anything proactive, he's too scared to take any form of stance for anything because he thinks he can cater to both the Left & the Right by sitting on the fence for everything
There's no point in Starmer having any kind of policy or political compass - when the wind changes direction he'll U-turn to wherever it's blowing him that day.

So it's a good job he has none whatsoever.

Honestly, now is the time for PR. Labour can split into the socialists and the opportunists, the Tories can split into the ERG and whatever else, and the electorate can stop being forced to vote for two supremely awful "broad churches" that have both lost their way, completely.

For months it's been 'HS2 should be scrapped blah blah blah' and now when they do scrap it it's 'HS2 shouldn't be scrapped blah blah blah'..

Pathetic.
We need to fix our politics before any kind of large-scale infrastructure project can succeed.

Britain is broken and our broken politics is the rotten core infecting everything else.

What are you actually complaining about here? Are you annoyed that HS2 being cancelled is big news, or are you under the impression that people who disagree with the scrapping wanted this to happen?

Or is this one of those "I'm allowed to complain about this thing endlessly, but once a decision has been made that I agree with anyone who complains about that is a sore loser" type situations?

anyone would think there are different people complaining and we are not some hive mind.... who knew?

personally i think HS2 should never have happened, as others have said i would much rather had a slower service but rolled out over a larger region.

however once committed then castrating it as they have is the worst option of all. we have already paid billions and acres of land has been butchered. they should press on now and get it done properly.

this shower of .... in power now i would not trust to organise a kids birthday party, let alone run a country...... is the alternative any better? Dunno but i do not see how they can be worse.

where is the real life Monty Brewster when you need him.?

I'm complaining that nobody has been vocally supporting HS2 for ages now so why all the froth when it finally gets scrapped?

i dont vocally support shipping Asylum seekers to other countries either................ but that does not mean i would be happy if half way through their flight to Rwanda they changed their mind and kicked them all out of the plane mid flight.
I didnt want it, but now its started they need to at least make it worthwhile and go through with it.

I mean some people have, but it's not really been relevant for some time because the issue was decided and HS2 was going to be built to Manchester. You being annoyed that lots of people are now generating 'froth' about the cancellation just makes zero sense, because it's actually quite a big news story so obviously people will have opinions on it.

Idk when the last time you vocally expressed affection for your left shoe was but you'd still be pretty annoyed if someone stole it, right?

n111ck complaining and frothing makes perfect sense :D

People filibustered and tried their best to frustrate HS2 from the very get go. Some even complain now because it is not happening. Can’t win.

Should have just built the whole damned thing. But instead wasted money on consultants, lawyers and then gave up.

Might as well just get on with taxing the rich, printing money and spending everything on the NHS and benefits.

Pretty demoralising that we cannot build anything other than ugly blocks of flats (which aren’t even built properly - cladding scandal).

Now let’s see what Labour have to say about it all. What’s their bright vision for the future. It’s 12 months away so their wall of silence should be lifting any time now…

People will literally just whinge about anything based on the way the wind blows..

I'll bet a review of the 84 pages here would reveal some massive hypocrisy and political opportunism...

Personally I'll reserve froth until we find out where the saved money will go..

I never really agreed with the cost / benefits of HS2 and think that money could have been put to better use elsewhere but they have already destroyed large areas of the countryside around here so they better finish it or at least put it right.

Listening to the radio yesterday the stories of waste and profiteering from HS2 were crazy. Paying over market price for materials and transport, the project was bleeding money.

But what if 'finishing it' involves an ever increasing cost? Where do you draw the line?
