Why are "3 door" hatchbacks cool?

Cheap insurance, and it's still quicker than most of the cars my mates drive. 1.4 in 2007 isn't the same as 1.4 in 1990.

2007 Golf 1.4: 0-60 14.2 seconds

Do your friends drive milk floats?

We buy cars that suit our lifestyles. Mine involves going out with friends, where, invariably, I will drive.

Only cause you don't drink.

Useful type though, I have a mate who doesnt drink. He does need a 5dr as the drunk in the front seat is hard to get out when he's passed out at 4am.

Must be good to have a mate who buys a car just for nights out :D

Ger off?

So the only reason 5 doors are cool, is cos his mum has one, bless :p

If I got my hands on £26,000 I would order a 5 door R32 over a 3 door one without a doubt.

And for the record, my parents let me pick everything for the Golf. I opted for a 5 door variant (I was one of the first people in my year to drive so I knew I'd be giving lots of lifts) in pearl effect black paint. They didn't want to get the 1.6 FSI because of insurance which is fair enough tbh.

It was either a brand new MK5 Golf to share with my mum, or my own car but something cheap and old like a 1.2 fiesta or 106. I think I made the right choice, especially as my mum hardly ever drives it.

And you ended up with a bottom of the range one with no options, wow they really gave you a great opportunity :D

The optional pearl effect paint was something like £500 and we did get quite a few extras put in, including the upgraded sound system and rear speakers. It would have been nice to get some alloys, but once again this would have put the insurance up substantially.

This is the most ridiculous argument ever. Would you rather have, say, an old 1.2 fiesta or a 106, or a brand new 1.4 vw golf. If I had opted for my own car, they would have spent a max of £3000 and it would have been just as slow to keep the insurance down.

Lastly, to be quite honest I enjoy driving it. It isn't slow compared to what my friends drive, in fact it can feel quite fast at times. Until I get my own car I am perfectly happy driving it.

Wow... rear speakers? Awesome.

I have free use of my parents 530d. I still bought my own. Having a car to call your own is totally different to borrowing your parents.

Personally I would have taken the £3000, that's a lot of money for a first car, it's what I spent on mine.

But to each, his own. You're happy with it :)

I'm not an idiot though. What's the point in having my own car, when my mum hardly ever drives the Golf (so it's pretty much mine) and I'm not paying petrol, insurance or anything like that. It's expensive to set up in the car world at 17/18, namely due to insurance. The way I've done things, this time next year or in a few years I'll have NCB and lots of money I've saved up to buy a really nice car.

I fully appreciate there's something about having your OWN car, but right now it makes economic sense to do what I'm doing.

1400cc is 1400cc no matter what year it is ;)

Plus, a 1.4 hatch in 1990 (205?) will probably be about half the weight of your (mums) Golf.

Fail. On an epic scale.

PS: who are you insured with on a Golf so young?

It's not just that though. My parents were very against a third car and would have insisted I pay petrol/insurance/maintanence etc.

Anyways, as I said I'm happy atm and I will obviously be thrilled the day I buy my very own car.

Performance/efficiency will increase with every generation of car. A 1.4 car of 2007 will probably be much quicker than the 1.4 car of, say 1998.

The Golf is heavy, but it's not the tank everyone makes it out to be. One of my friends has an old 1.4 Polo (much lighter, yes?) and higher up the revs the Golf outperforms it. We overtook him easily on a hill and he says he was milking it for all it was worth, as was I :D

I'm insured with Liverpool Victoria. I'm not even sure it's the best deal but my dad seems to trust them above other companies.

How you getting NCB if you are sharing the car with your mum? Is she not the main driver?

I have literally just switched from the 2nd driver and to the first. Now I've been driving for a year, it was cheaper than to do it originally.

5/4 door for the win, they're easier to insure! :p

Doing quotes for 4 vs 2 door 330is yesterday and my insurer said bog off until you're 21 for the coupe, and "knock yourself out, only a ton a year more than your Mondeo" for the saloon O_o

For a laugh, I asked them how much it'd be to swap my car for a Saxo VTR.....yes, the 3 door 1.6 8v Saxo........

.....come back when you're 21.

Go-on then, I'll race ya, in my 1988 Peugeot 205, 1360ccs of French power...I can guarantee that the 1.4 golf will cry. :p

Seriously though, the weight and power distribution (well weight to power ratio), old 1.4s are better than newer ones...it's crunch (literally) time that they fall flat on their faces.
