Why are certain types of racism tolerated on here?

Honky? what is that in reference to? doesnt seem to connotate with "white", "brit", or even "caucasian"...in which case im guessing its a whole new name which has been made up for some purpose?

The word "honky" as a pejorative for caucasians comes from "bohunk" and "hunky". In the early 1900's, these were derogatory terms for Bohemian, Hungarian, and Polish immigrants. According to Robert Hendrickson, author of the Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins, Black workers in Chicago meat-packing plants picked up the term from white workers and began applying it indiscriminately to all Caucasians.

Honky, was later adopted as a pejorative meaning white, in 1967 by black militants within SNCC seeking a rebuttal for the term ******. They settled on a familiar word they felt was disparaging to certain Americans of European descent; hunkie meaning an American of Slavic or Hungarian descent.

I'm not. My argument still stands. Go up to a black person tomorrow and say "Hey how's it going ******?" in an innocent tone and explain to that person afterwards it wasn't an insult.
It would be an insult if I didn't know the person. I'll gladly say it on msn to one of my black mates and paste the conversation here if that floats your boat.

I probably live in one of the most mixed towns in the country and I can tell you now, saying 'do you fancy a chinky' is not racist and has nothing whatsoever to going up to a random stranger and calling them a ******. Can you seriously not see the difference?

The topic is about racist comments, therefore I would say its only racist to the individual. I could comment as someone as a chink as a friendly gesture, that could be taken as a racist comment to others. Its a circular argument and where all right and wrong.

According to blurr it is racist when you refer to food by a name that may be considered derogatory if you called a person it.

So I vote we ban Brains Faggots, fish fingers, sausages and sugar.

Yeah because when you look up "Chinky" in the dictionary it says "Chinese food". Why not just say Chinese food in the first place.

You seriously think going up to someone you don't know and calling them '******' is on a par with saying to someone 'let's go out for a chinky'?

My local chinky does excellent food and the service is 2nd to none, the Chinese couple who own & run it are fantastic too.
Next time I get a take away I'll ask my egg fried rice & rendang chicken if it is offended by being called chinky food.

I don't see what your problem is.

Jock ? A good mate of mine is Scottish and thats his nickname and he like to be called that. It merely reflects where he's from.

I get called a Geordie ******* regularly in jest and I laugh at it as it's in fun.

Stan rightly points out that PC madness ruins that sort of banter. If you don't like being called Jock the fine, tell those who call you it but I don't see why masses have to be the same to satisfy the minority.

Also remember that the English are called a lot worse than that by Scottish people. It's the nature of the beast.

its pretty obvious that if you say it to a friend then its a whole other matter.. but if you for example say ****** around black people who you dont know (eg. a forum) then there is a damn good chance they will get offended.

im sick of people saying this context crap when especially when they are referring to when they are speaking to friends

i can also tell you know that the majority of chinese people i know find the term chinky offensive, regardless of whether people use it to describe a chinese take away. you can blame the scrotes who refer to chinese people as chinky

For the same reason he probably says chippy, Maccy D's or the offy, rather than chip shop, MacDonald's or off licence.

They are colloquialisms, they're not supposed to make sense, they are just different words used to describe things or places.

I wouldn't take too much notice of what the OP says:

Look up 'LOL' just because its not in the dictionary doesn't mean its meant as a n offence.
Cant you understand the context in which the message was sent? If someone called me a pleasant Brit should I be offended? What about pleasant Chink? Scumbag Brit, should I be offended at being called Brit or scumbag? please tell me when I should be offended.

As much as I like Wikipedia, I don't rate the link that was posted much above the urban dictionary. If you read between the lines it's easy enough to tell how accurate that page is likely to be.

You're not listening to what I'm saying.

The vast majority of people who use the word chinky to describe food or a restaurant/take-away don't see it as being anything to do with race - it's just a word to describe their meal or the place where they buy it from. How the hell can calling a tin foil tray of chop suey a chinky be construed as racist

the thing is, chink, ****** etc are seen as racial slurs whereas brit isnt (i dont think anyway), like i dont think you could ever dream of calling a chinese person pleasant chink, or a black person a pleasant ****** without causing offence, unless of course they are your friend

that was the term the Americans used for Japanese POW, then maybe you would see that as offensive.

Unless there's more to it than that then it is still just an abbreviation of "Japanese". There were POWs from all countries. I'm sure the German's called the British POWs "Brits" or "Tommys", or the American ones "Yankies". Hell the British POWs called themselves "Kriegies". Do I find any of these offesive? Nope. Do I find it offensive when people call me a Canuck? nope. however if they're shouting at me and having a go then yes I will take offence, but not because of being called a Canuck, but because of the situation and them behaving like gits.

Still, takes all sorts to make the world go round. I just find it funny that only white people can be racist, kinda defeats the whole argument for me.
