Why can't they just remove the lid and sip like from a cup ?

Considering the world uses over a billion a day, why do you think our minuscule number makes a difference. Again, for the terminal stupid, I'm not saying "don't bother" I'm just pointing out that, other than making the middle class "feel good", the net effect of only McD staws being paper is effective zero.

Surely the benefit is we can take moral high ground over other countries ?

If we're seen to at least be doing something then when we pander to other countries to curb their pollution we can lead by example rather than the traditional "do as I say, not what I do"

Don't like the "feel" of the new paper straws, it's like you left the paper on the plastic ones by mistake, plus you "need" a straw if you get a drink with ice as the ice gets in the way if you drink it normally and bangs your teeth, leading to spills.

Lol, aww diddums :D

Once you leave your echo chamber it's much easier to understand people, you'll make far fewer mistakes.

.

Funny your post is totally different now, like you just edited it to not make your argument look totally flawed. No point reasoning with people like you, your mind is made up.

Shouldn't you be concentrating on driving?
The straws don't go soggy unless you wait half an hour before drinking your drink anyway, so if you are in such a rush and have such an important self entitled attitude, you will never need to experience a soggy straw. ;)

The motor mechanics require to drink whilst driving are so tiny that any healthy person will still be able to still concentrate on a simple task such as driving.

It's pretty much the reason cars come with cup holders......

But to the whole above, plastic is bad and we should be cutting down as much as possible.

Cars come with cup holders still you can carry things like Starbucks cups, cans, McDonald's cups, etc etc - all of which are designed to be drunk through a straw or a lid with a hole.

When's the last time you put a normal drinking glass or a mug in a car cup holder?! It would all slosh out at the first roundabout...

Wow, the conspiracy theory is real :D

It's a shame that if you edit a post more than 1 minute after posting , IT TELLS EVERYONE YOU EDITED IT - do any of my posts say that, which would then the absolute proof that you are right?

Like I said, echo chamber & mistakes!

This is added via an edit!!!

Your post is totally different, so you did edit it as I said. Maybe you had a think what you had written was rubbish and corrected your mistake. Well done ;)

Not sure why your banging on about echo chambers either, reducing any pollution in any form is a good thing, why is it an echo chamber to say so?

I never said anything about not needing a lid or straw.

I said that it's possible to still drink and concentrate on the road.

Paper straws, plastic lids :p. One picture of a turtle with a straw in its nose and some plastic in the ocean near a storm hit island, picked up by the media and the world goes crazy. Drop in the ocean. The biggest problem is overpopulation - but I don't see anyone wanting to address that anytime soon.

I've been arguing for population reduction for a long time. But some of the most extreme environmental protestors I know keep insisting it's unnecessary. No, it's not "necessary", but it would be a very positive move. Best single thing you could do - support women's education and rights in the Middle East and Africa. People aren't generally going to want to go through pregnancy six or seven times if they have other options.

I know someone attending these protests. Guess how she got there. Yup, an Uber and it won't be too long til she is back flying on holiday.

I probably know about six or seven (only four well, though). One of these people I respect a lot. And yes, she owns steel straws and has a kitchen well-provisioned with silicone covers and glass bottles and cotton bags with their weight written onto the side so they can be filled up with rice, etc. for weighing. The rest of them are basically communists who will protest anything. There's validity to a lot of the stated aims. But like a lot of mass movements, I worry about how that energy will be directed. For example, Friends of the Earth have inserted themselves in front of the cameras at any opportunity and pretended environmentalist are against nuclear power. Actually, many of us are extremely pro-Nuclear power. But WE don't get the media coverage.

Because we end up footing the bill and it is absolutely insignificant compared to the big polluting countries. Oh yes, lets lead, the US and China are guaranteed to follow.

As I mentioned earlier, China is investing heavily in nuclear power. That's going to make our energy efficiency (re environmental impact as well as cost) look like a bad joke.

If by leaders you mean they'll have stolen technology from US and European scientists and backwards engineered it, then maybe

Oh, they're absolutely doing this. But at the same time, we have pretty much destroyed our own nuclear industry. Can't blame the Chinese for that.

And at the end of the day, they're still putting the money in to build the things.

Sorry, I don't debate with delusional lairs. The content of my post is unchanged, if you believe your reality is different to everyone else's then you have mental issues that a professional should help you with.

I used a McD's paper straw since the change and it wasn't that bad, though the plastic ones are obviously better.

Clearly the solution for this is to have reusable Ronald McDonald sippy cups hanging above the counter like Pete Beale's tankard from Eastenders.

Anyone that can't deal with the straws can use of those instead.

You don’t debate at all. Your entire argument is ‘ice hits my teeth’...
