Why do lorries do it?

My brother is a truck mechanic who works for DAF. Sometimes he has to drive articulated trucks from A to B so what he does is remove the limiter and do about 80-90 in the outside lane. He is mad but gets big rewards for getting the trucks deliverd quick :)

How does he get round the tachogragh which would record these speeds and what about the limiter seals?
I'm sure VOSA would love to catch up with him, Or the next driver who gets a spot check and gets acused of messing with the limiter.

He also fiddles with the tachograph, dont know how but he is a very good mechanic and knows trucks inside out.

I'd be interested to know the rate of accidents involving HGVs in the USA.

I'm pretty sure they don't have limiters there as you regularly come across them doing 70 - 80 mph, the same speed as most of the cars, which means traffic flows a lot smoother and doesn't bunch up behind them.

Not suggesting that driving such a large vehicle at that speed is sensible though...

Is this like the same guy my mate knows whos been 80mph in a 17 tonne dumper?

People talk **** when drunk eh.

AFAIK some tacho meters take 15 seconds or so to boot up, so for 15 seconds after turning the ignition off and on, you have no speed limiter.

Hmm, I always thought DAF dealers were crap! :D

what you write is a bit funny though, for example, my old 05 plate DAF 95XF480 (Thats 480bhp) artic was geared for a top speed of 69mph 90 would have the engine off the clock into the red you know....

A good mechanic? treating a customers £85k rig like that? - I'll have what your on please mate. ;)

I assume he does these speeds running "solo" i.e. without the trailer?

Easiest thing in the world, pull the limiter fuse on an analogue tacho, it usually knocks out the indicators , sometimes the fuel heater circuit too. He'd have to be a good mechanic to get round the digital tacho's fitted in all new trucks - they have a battery backup. Not to mention the dealer has to - by law - operate customers trucks on a digital tacho card - this is why digital tachographs have a "service" function.

He may be a good mechanic, but he's far behind the times and either telling you some BS and / or a cretin who's one day going to realise he should have stayed in the workshop and off the road in an HGV!

Speaking from "experience" a Scania is good for around 85 before you blow the engine to little bits.

Oaft 85mph,thats not too bad!

My mates dad was out on a delivery the other day when his accelerator cable snapped,he was going round the main roundabout at the raith interchange, junction 5 of the M74 at 2mph with the cops escorting him round! Just sit there clutch up feet off the pedals, must have been pretty boring.

Dont think it was an artic but he said it was 17 tonne anyway.

2 axle rigid sir. :)

Oh one of those. My granda used to take me out in his rigid when he delivered for scottish power.

The trucks that bring the deliveries to my work are huge, the have two levels amd must way so much. Are these under the same restrictions as normal artics?

edit: sorry, they just looks like the size of normal artics.....wasnt really thinking.

LOL Thats not a 17 tonner!

They don't actually weigh that much - 38 tonne max -, they are designed to carry cages of relatively lightweight product, hence the double deck.

They (the DAF CF which that Halfords motor is) are not a bad truck to drive, the trouble is the height of the trailers, they are nightmares in towns & cities as they are simply too high for the vast majority of bridges!

Other than the height, they are no different to drive any other tri-axle trailered artic. :)

lol the 17 tonner is what my mates dad was driving when his cable snapped.

I was just posting to see if these dual deck things were any different as when i have to bring the stock off the lorries at work i wasl ike  at the size of the thing!

I wouldnt fancy driving that truck down some awkward roads in the city, luckily the guys just come off the motorway straight into the retail park. a lot of the truckers park up round the back and head to the pub!

If theres a Homebase,or perhaps its a Focus or, Wickes DIY store on that retail park,Palace Grounds Road by any chance? - I guarantee you I'll have done the same when I was working for my last employer - SCA Timber.

Had a few good nights there! :D

Palace grounds,straight off the 74 junction 6.

Its a homebase thats at the end of the block.

LOL small world! :D

You probably met my mate who was a manager in homebase...we had a huge amount of 'spare' timber from the back of homebase for building bike stuff.

I assume you truck drivers get away with sleepin in the truck after having a few drinks with the keys still on you?

or is this maybe why most of the truckers try to get round the back before the gates are locked so the cops cant get in?

Got it in one mate, plus, I'll be in bed for 9 at the latest, and the store isn't open for deliverys until 8:30 > 9:00 by the time I drive away, I've had a good 13 - 14 hours break, and, obviously, not a skinfull the previous night - some drivers get hammered though!

Aha i get it now. My mum works in harry corry on the same industrial estate and has to leave via the back door and she and the other females get intimidated by truckers staring at them as they go past :o

Can tell her to shut up now as its for good reason. I wouldnt risk getting hammered if i relied on my license for making a living though, thats daft.

Sorry that this seemed to have turned into 'ask the trucker' hour. :p

LOL Perhaps, this forum needs an "Ask the Trucker" Sticky? - strikes me, a lot of motorists obviously come across trucks & truckers, but, knows little about what it is to drive one for a living.

Tell your mum not to worry, its just that trucker "OMG! A Woman! " thing - most of us don't see our women for most of the week. :( - Anybody tried anything funny with her, I guarantee you, it'll be the truckers that help her out! - I've seen it done - some "interesting" things go on in retail parks, you wouldn't believe what I've seen. ;) :D
