Why do some people do this? (overtaking related)

The joys of nsl roads, I usually speed down these roads as round here they are generally straight with nice big corners so you can take them at speed but people coming towards me decide I'm going too fast and full beam me, this makes me slow down though as now I can't see **** and don't want to crash. The other day I was driving along with my full beams on, a car came round a corner so I quickly turned them off in less than half a second but the car coming towards me thinks I wanted to blind him so he sticks his full beams on at me and now I can't see again, bloody idiots.

But the thing that does annoy me more than anything is the ones who full beam and beep at you when they get over taken.

i've never really had a problem with this, but i hardly ever overtake. Had a very scary near miss a couple of years ago where i misjudged the cars power and the slope of a hill. Was overtaking a truck and only just made it past. Had to pull over for a good 10 min while i let my heart calm down from that!

when i overtake now i drop back and floor it so i get a decent amount of speed up befor getting parrallel with them to minimise the time on the other side of the road.

However when myself and freefaller were driving back from the exeter meet some numpty in a X5 deceded that after i over took them they would block Will off from overtaking multiple times. Just pulled over infront of him. Than kinda thing makes me mad

Uh huh.. I get many prats speeding up when I overtake, so i drop a gear and accelerate faster.

I had a little incident with this about 2 months ago, guy in an Audi infront with a lady passenger doing 40 on a NSL road, I stayed behind them for a while but eventually I got bored and realised he wasn't going to go any faster so I waited for a long clear stretch and went for it, as I'm overtaking he starts speeding up, then a BMW comes flying towards me, must have been doing 100+, this is when I started to panic a queue had formed behind Mr Audi and the person behind me had now taken up my place behind the Audi driver, I had to just keep going, I quite honestly thought this was it I was going to have a huge accident and probably die, really weird feeling, anyway I made it with seconds to spare and pulled over as soon as I could while I tried to calm down....anyway I haven't overtaken anyone since then :(

That guy was a tool. Forced me right over  Still got past him on the 3rd attempt ;)

I've had people speed up many times in an attempt to prevent me overtaking - now I always stick it in the lowest gear it will handle and let it scream to the redline so that I can be back in the correct lane ASAP.

Most of these morons that try to stop you overtaking simply plant their right foot but don't change gear, so as long as you drop a few cogs and are not too gentle with the car you can usually speed past them effortlessly.

Antisocial perhaps, with all that noise, but better than staying alongside them for more than necessary.

agreed the astra is only a 1.6 but i have no problems ovetaking...usually ;)

the first time i overtook someone was when i had L plates on and me dad were in the car (about a week away from my test) came to a long straight bit of road with a 60mph limit, and theres a guy in an escort doing 35....i was like you are kidding?, and my dad simple said

"Have 'im"

so im in 4th, double the clutch and drop it into second (im doin 30 remember?)
engine goes upto 5k (redlines at 7)
pull out into the other lane (nothing coming at all) and my foots already on the floor and i change into 3rd and im past him in seconds and when i pull back infront of him hes flashing his lights etc. but its pointless. this road i no very well and must be 2 miles straight at least and we were the only 2 there.

he was probably more annoyed by the fact i had L plates on

Felt great at the time though :D

You double-de-clutched? Why?

It stops the car getting that sudden jerk when you change down gears and it keeps the revs up and keeps the gear change smooth.

Double-de-clutch is not necessary.

You're thinking of blipping the throttle between going down the gears. Double-de-clutch is different...

One day you will learn that your 1.6 isn't a rocket ship.

;) Yeh i no but for a 17 year old its pretty nippy :p

- Clutch down change into neutral
- Clutch up
- Rev the engine
- Clutch down into second

Because you change down the engine has to speed up, doubling the clutch ensures much easier and smoother gear changing plus according to dad its better for the engine. Also you can then use the engine as a brake :)

modern cars tend to have synchromesh, which renders double-declutching pretty much redundant....

I often get cars flooring it as I pass them but I rarely even notice, the only sign is the smoke coming from the diesel engines or the rear suspension looking rather low down all of a sudden :p

yeh i no but seeing as my dad has been driving since he was 8 and nearly everyday of his life when i got my provisional he said 3 things to me

"First ill let the instructor teach you how to pass"

"Then ill teach you how to drive"

"And if you fail first time....i'll disown you"

the second thing pretty much started happening straight away lol.

so in the process i learnt how to drive without a clutch at all (yes it is easily possible) and when you no how to do it - it doesnt damage the engine (well mainly it doesnt make the same crunching noises you heard when you were learning)

and my dad got me into the habit of double clutching when changing down gears, i now do it all the time no matter the car.

You don't need to double-de-clutch.

Just change down normally except blip the throttle before you lift the clutch up :)

i no :) but since my dad got me into the habit of doubling the clutch i always do it lol.

Have you any idea how pointless that is?

have you any idea everytime you post you sound really irritable and very annoyed by the simple fact your posting?

No, he's mostly just fed up of all the 17 yo wanna be racing drivers who ignore the fact that what they are doing really is pointless.
