Why does everyone diss the Wii ?, step inside............

All I've seen regarding Wii DVD playback is:
Edge Magazine said:
Nintendo is planning to release a DVD playback pack for its next-generation console, Wii, but it looks like only Japanese consumers will ever get the chance to buy it. Europe and the US, it seems, are too stuffed with cheap DVD players to make such a move worthwhile.

A lot of people do, that is true. But then why do Sony and Microsoft put them in theres? They are the ones that carry out market research and therefore there must be a reason to, which is my point. :).
I'd have just liked a diddy little DVD player tbh :p.

The Japanese love their stuff as all in ones, partly due to a lot of them living in tiny rooms, there was a Gamecube that played DVDs remember.

I think MS and Sony have the DVD playback because they had it last time round, when the players were much more expensive and they decided at the time it was worth it ;)
They did it this time round, probably at least in part because it would have gone against them in the features table if they didn't, and the cost was almost non-existent (they had dvd drives, and no doubt already had the licence for mpeg2 playback for use in game cut scenes).

But aye, I wouldn't mind a nice small standalone player, but only if it was at least as good as my 4 year old Toshiba (which has had thousands of hours of use, and is still going strong)

They are both also pushing media centres as a selling point, which would be crap without an upscaling DVD player :p

Nintendo profiteering doesnt really help the consumer however!

Where are they profiteering? I think they've been done in the past for price fixing or something, but the profit they make on single items isn't excessive, not like the mark up on food for instance. They sell a lot of stuff.
They also dominate the Top 10 gaming charts in Japan 10/10 last week.

It keeps them in business which directly benefits me as I really enjoy the games they make.

running to zero profit can also keep them in business, 10% profit even. profiteering offers no further benefit to the consumer than the above im afraid.

the wii may outsell the other consoles by a lot, but then its under half price of a ps3, so they have to sell over twice as many just to make the same amount of money.
No, Nintendo make a profit on hardware sold, MS and Sony don't.
Therefore Nintendo just needs MS and Sony to sell a single console and Nintendo will have better sales profit. The more consoles all three sell currently the bigger Nintendo's profit margin becomes compared to the competition.
Only in a couple of years will the other be able to sell their consoles at a profit.

i played on a wii on non wii games (like cod3 and zelda) and i didnt like the new control at all, but I assume it will be very good with wii only games like tennis etc. I looked into the wii, but to me its just an overclocked gamecube with a fancy controller. It M$ made one for the 360 the wii would go under.
I doubt it very much. Look how many DS' are sold, and people will always buy quality nintendo games.

Still i liked the idea of one but when I found out it didnt even play dvds or run HD I was put right off.
That is what a DVD player is for.
The wii is a games console, it is designed to play games. It is perhaps the only true hardcore gamers console in that respect.

The wii is a great console for 2004, when it should have been released as it is way outdated and the graphics look crap already.

nintendo spent 4/5 years making a controller, they did bugger all to the console.

The graphics look great to me, and who cares?
The console is very different to the GC if you bothered to do your research. There are many similarities, but that is a bonus which helps developers reducing costs.

If I was running a business you'd better believe I'd be making as much as possible for whatever I was selling.

If you want to go on about profiteering you wanna look at the pharmaceutical market, the markup they make is outrageous... and medicine is important!

I still think that the Wii is £20 or £30 over priced for what it is (speaking as a launch day owner), but if I thought I could remain competitive in relation to others in terms of price, I'd push what I could charge too!

In regards to the Wii not having DVD playback, I'm not particularly bothered. I've got a £30 HDMI DVD player that gives me a great picture. It also has digital out to my stereo. The Wii can do neither. If it meant these features were added to the Wii for DVD playback then I'd be happy, although it's nice to have a display on your DVD player (personally), which again the Wii doesn't have.

A HDD or a more useful SD card setup would be preferred by me in terms of a Wii mkII. And I probably wouldn't upgrade unless my current Wii kicked the bucket (and it better not - my SNES, N64 and GC are all going strong!).
