Why does nearly everyone hate oblivion?

What are some of the must have mods for this game to make the experience better? like making the outdoors look nicer etc?

These are some of the mods I'm using. Most aren't GFX mods. There is a mod by Qarl that replaces a lot of the textures but a 512MB GFX card is recommended. There is a thread here: http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=644824

I don't like it personally, i'm not sure why. I'm a big RPG fan and Oblivion ticks all the boxes for me theoretically... yet I just found myself completely bored after awhile and put it down after a few days and didn't pick it back up.

Its a good game no doubt, but in my opinion far from the best game of last year.

Vanilla Oblivion is a good game.

Modded Oblivion is one of the best games i've ever played. Incredibly immersive, fun to play and so many 'wow' moments. Since it came out i've spent more time playing Oblivion than any other game, by a long long way.

Personally i wasn't bothered by the levelling system. The only thing i've modded in that regard is the quest rewards levelling, so they level with you rather than getting something crappy just because you happened to do a particular quest too early.

I've never just stood there and levelled particular attributes as so many people seem to either. I just do stuff i want to do and the attributes that are useful to my character improve - the difficulty level has always been pretty well balanced throughout in my experience. The one thing i would say is that i read a few threads on the TES forums before creating my character to get a good understanding of how things worked in terms of attributes and levelling up - so maybe that enabled my to create a character that doesn't run into the kind of problems so many seem to encounter (e.g. getting their ass kicked in just about every combat situation).

Agree with whoever said they need more voice actors. It's ridiculous to only have one voice per race or whatever it is. Given the grand scale of so much else in the game it seems a stupid thing to overlook.

I certainly don't! loved the game, played it for 100+ hours and had a lot of fun. Unfortuantly as said the leveling system is crap, and it was dumbed down for the xbox. Plus a lot of very good mods have been made which do fix a lot of issues and add extra things in.

Everyone on here seems to hate oblivion, i for one think its the greatest game of 2006, but some quotes from the last few weeks ive seen.

"Oblivion Was Dire"

"Awful Game, So overated"

"A letdown for the TES series"

Seriously though, the game is huge, loads to do, fun quests, fantastic graphics, and best of all the modding community is huge, loads more life into the game from mods.

So why does everyone on here hate it so much?

Yet i havent played Morrowind, most people say its better.

1. it got boring, i kept getting lost in the big city, lost in the mountains, and the map doesnt work.

2. just before getting to the city, where all the bridges are, the game slowed right down to about 5 fps, annoying.

3. you got arrested for niggly little things, for instance killing someone in a pub would get you arrested later in the game by a gaurd yet there were no guards in the pub.......do guards have mobile phones in oblivion ?

That was so bad someone even released a patch for it.

people on here, although i still love oblivion, have persuaded me to try Morrowind.

Can anyone answer these questions for me?

1: Are there any texture packs for it? to make it look a lot better? Because desptite it looking a pretty good game, the graphics are crap.

2: Are there as many npcs, and are they like in oblivion?

3: a lot of side quests?

thanks

Good game but Morrowind was infinitely better. Could have been so much greater though however that fast travel takes away from the overall game experience.

There are some great texture packs for Morrowind. I modded the GFX to the point that it was unplayable on my old computer :)

Look out for these.

Visual_Pack_XT_2
MW_visual_pack_2.11
KP_MW_Visual_Pack_2.2_nature
More Trees and Foliage - New Foliage Textures
Gardeners of Morrowind
Lights300_V4 (great mod that changes the lighting)
better_bodies_v2[1].0
heads_pack

There are loads of others that change the icons, gold, signposts, lockpicks, weapons etc.

Of course there are also some great gameplay mods that change things like the stupid economic system and add lots of other features.

Here's a few screens showing some of the new textures.

I really dont see why people thought morrowind was sooo much better because it wasnt. It was the same as Oblvion in that every quest involves crappy-go-here-do-that-come-back. Thats it. Oblivion in this respect is the same. Except it looks a bit better, both games wow'ed me first time i played them, but after 15 hours you've done everything and its just boring.

Fast travel is not compulsory.

The game would have been better if the game was developed for the PC and ported to the 360 instead of the other way around. The game would have then likely been less demanding on the hardware in your PC.

Dosent look all that bad at all.

You couldnt answer the other questions aswell could you?

thanks.

Makes me laugh the amount of people stating its boring or did'nt like the to'ing and from'ing etc etc.
it is an RPG. you get out what you put in, its not a linear shooter.
the beauty is 10 people could start from the sewers and those ten would each have a unique experience to tell.
you can't do that with any shooter.
whilst i conceede the game is buggy and flawed. ie repeated conversations by npc's. small amount of voice actors etc. these are in kind answered by bethesda on the oblivion UESP wiki. the sheer amount of script and voice acting present is astonishing. to increase this was beyond bethesda's financial/time scope.
even if there were more voice actors people would still complain as we're all used to the individuality of real life people.
ideally a dynamic A.I response and voice generator is needed for this sort of game...... how many years till that happens?

fortunately the pc mod community makes a good game fantastic. yet again proof that the pc is the elite of gaming platforms for players wanting to tailor games for their own needs.

if you think setting .ini files, balancing graphic settings, downloading installing load ordering mods is a waste of time thats fine. it is something a gamer should not need to do. however its also a way of making your game unique just like your adventures are unique to every other oblivion player.
for me it is a way of escapism in a fictional world done so and played in a way i have chosen.

try playing bf2 in a unique individual way. you can't. you are at the mercy of how every other online gamer wants to play. thats why i quit online shooters. also why i won't play HL2 or dark messiah again or their sequels. i've gotten to enjoy playing my way now not how the game makes me play.

Yes sure. There are lots of NPC's and many mods that add more if you wish. There are some good companion mods. I use some mods that populate the game more such as 'morrowind_comes_alive'.

Same with side quests. Plenty with the vanilla game but you can add more.

This is a great page that lists tons of Morrowind mods.
