Why is 10 Gb Ethernet still so expensive?

Same switch I have (as well as a UniFi 16XG) and a TVS-671 with 10 Gbit adaptor, 4x 10TB Iron Wolf drives and 2x Crucial SSDs running QTier. It'll top out around 600 MB/s but more often than not won't see much past 2-300 MB/s. I need either better cache drives (NVMe) or work out what's going on with QTier.

Cool, Synology NAS with 6 x 6TB WD Reds here, I need to sort out some SSD caching I guess.

I have an Arista 24 x Port SFP switch but it's just too noisy for the house, I'm going to run a SM fiber to the barn and put my NAS and some other stuff out there, already have a 19" quarter height rack waiting :)

About £1,000 all in.

I already have a Qnap 853a.
Was going to add a better nas...but even though I can afford it...I won't pay it :D

I do love the Qnap software.
For that amount you could easily build a system under budget if the 853a is your benchmark, definitely paying a premium for the convenience of the Qnap (though the new Ryzen ones they make look lovely!)

I've removed QTier from my QNAP, always thought it hindered performance rather than improved it. Early testing but a simple file copy to/from my 10 Gbit NIC Mac Mini and I'm getting 3-400 MB/s read and 400 MB/s write. I've got a second pool using my SSDs for block storage.

That's a great find.
I will cross that off my app list.

You can get a R7515 8 core 16 thread 2U server from Dell for £1,615.47 currently with 8x 3.5" bays. Chuck in a 10 Gbit card and you've got a seriously capable FreeNAS or equivalent box. There are other savings codes to be around, someone on my work slack channel said he's managed to get it down to $1170 without tax in the US!

Thank you.
I will look in to that asap... :)
