Why is AMD quiet about black screens on 290x?

This is very poor of AMD, I see there is some AMD reps on here, Lt Matt can you get them to comment on the issue. Or are they only here to promote not help?

They did post in here at the time the beta driver was released and i can pretty much garantee that most the people still having issues after the blackscreen driver fix never reported any issue back to AMD. Or bothered trying to contact anyone relevant about it.

AFAIK Stanners, this.

I can replicate a black screen due to unstable overclock or lack of voltage on either core or AUX. I can also replicate it due to driver issue of card over heating using powertune auto fan settings. However this only appears (to the best of my knowledge) to affect users on windows 8. I think its because (for me at least on Win8) that powertune does not kick the fan up high enough to keep the card at or below the target temp. I reported my findings to Thracks and AMD and it was noted a week back. No new drivers since then. Immature drivers probably have something to do with it. However if it does it at stock with a fan profile of 55-60% then imo the card is faulty and should be sent back as i cannot replicate that at all.

My 290x was fine until I tried anything on the memory.

So even at stock you cannot overclock memory at all? Have you played with other settings? My cards seem to not flinch at all. I've had my memory up at 1625 (as high as afterburner will allow me) with no problems at all on both of my 290 pro's. You should try experimenting with AUX voltage or increase core voltage. Both improve memory overclocking.

did you play bf4 with those clocks?

No just benched Heaven, Valley, Firestrike, Firestrike Extreme, 3DMark 11. I did bench Tomb Raider (3/4 run throughs of the benchmark) at 1530mhz on both cards with no problems.

As i have crossfire i run my cards at stock for gaming (975/1250) as i have more fps than i need at 1440P 60hz.

These clocks are no problems for both my cards at stock voltage. My minimum fps also come on the spawn screen when im not actually playing. Hopefully mantle will rectify this little feature.

Getting this black screen quite regular now and it's annoying the **** out of me

Is it defo memory related? I have clocks of 1100/1500 @ +50mv core , +25% power, +13mv AUX voltage.

Any help to get rid of these black screens be awesome. Lost 10 hrs mining last night due to black screen :(

Unstable overclock. Try leaving Aux at 0v for now and focus on the core. Bump it up to +0.075mv and see if it still occurs. If it stil occurs at +0.100mv then start experimenting with Aux.

your cards seem fairly solid.
even 1350 on the memory will eventually blackscreen for me(after few hours).
set at 1150/1325 24/7 now. which is enough for me until I upgrade the rest of my computer. and then will see how it fairs then.

I found a higher vcore didn't make my overclocks stable but a lower temperature did. AMD claim this card is designed to be most efficient in performance at 94c - that's a load of bull I can get a 1160 overclock on stock volts if I have my fan at 100% but if I use their fan profile and up vcore to the max the card's not even stable at 1100 and artifacts.

Have you tried increasing core voltage/aux voltage to combat that black screen? Also how are temps before the black screen occurs?

yes have tried changing aux voltage .
Its hard to fully test really because anything below 1400 could play bf4 for over a hour before get a blackscreen.above 1400 usually takes 5-10 minutes.
benchmarks seem fine with 1500 though.
all temps are 65 max its on full cover block at the minute (only 1 rad though until i upgrade).

Strange, I have a 290x, the only time i have black screened was about beta 5 drivers and only with Asus GPU tweak, even with a very small OC.

Since I uninstalled Asus GPU Tweak and started with AB or Trixx, I have bump up the OC and has no black screens after 4-5 hours of solid 1440p gaming.

But I am under water too so my temps max about 52c on the same loop as a 4930k @ 4.8ghz (HEATTTTTTT).

I get the impression that there is more than one thing that has been triggering these black screens.

What about core voltage? From my testing black screen seems to be caused by lack of voltage or a too high overclock on the memory. Bump that core voltage some more. Aux seems to be there to allow you to Eek out a bit more of a memory overclock.

Whilst under water, would you say cranking up the Vcore and AUX to 100+ in AB would be safe for the card?

Honestly i can't say mate. Work up in baby steps. I would have thought it would be ok, but i don't know for sure. I'd worry about core voltage first before tweaking Aux. Aux is there to finetune i think and nothing more.

vrm1 temp is the biggest concern when bumping up voltage for overclocking, so keep an eye on that.

Also, I found that the Metro2033 benchmark is very good for testing memory clock stability. When I was testing for stability for the memory clock, if it is not stable it would pretty much black screen within the first 3 loops.
