Why is AMD quiet about black screens on 290x?

After reading a lot of these posts I no understand why people still buy the r290 cards and even worst is that so many people recommend them...

Granted its a small sample - 4 out of the 9-10 people I know IRL who have bought a 290 have had to RMA their card due to the blackscreen and redscreen issues. But the 2 that had a replacement rather than a refund have had absolutely no problems with the replacement cards that I'm aware of the other 2 swapped to 780/780tis instead rather than mess about. From reading about on these and other forums though it doesn't seem an unusual story with these cards - for the most part people haven't had a problem with replacement cards though.

I think you get are may be confused with the term DSR and rma :p

DSR is sending back and demanding for a refund, whereas rma is usually refer to sending back for replacement/repair/fixing under warranty :)

If you have used the BF4 code, then trying to get full refund under DSR would may be difficult, but replacement under rma should still be no problem, as that's covered under warranty, rather than DSR term.

I know what the difference is thank you :P

I have the BF4 code.

I'm saying it's under RMA now but if they just send back the same card saying there's no problem then i'd tell them just to DSR it which i'm fully entitled to do.

Anyways a little update for anyone having problems which I have posted in other similar threads too - I just left Unigine heaving running on mine for 2 hours no problem... and I've only had the one black screen when idle. I'm starting to think maybe it black screened to reset the temperature and it was creeping up to 90C watching a blu-ray and not being in 3d mode it never accelerated the fan above 20% I might cancel the RMA and see if a custom low temp fan profile sorts it out.

Its interesting you talk about the fan speeds, the MSI applications allow you to set the fan speed up to 100% from its standing 20% I wondered what sort of noise it made cause I've never really heard it spin up. Most of my Blue screens has been when its been idling with game, loading into a game or after a short burst of gaming.

The noise of the fan has never been something that I've heard all that much until I tried dialing it up on the MSI app, I tried the burn in application that they provided as well and it ran the card at 100% and the most the fan would push to was 45-50% speed.

All in all I'm fed up with this card and I think its team green and a 780 Ti for me as this launch product has been the worst I've had, even the 4870x2 I had was better than this and that was a wreck due to micro stuttering between the two GPU's.

This card went all the way up to 90c for me watching a blu-ray and the fan speed did not budge from 20%! I think a lot of people are having memory issues but having now used a custom fan profile I think mine may have black screened just to reset the temperature and it's only happened that one time while watching a blu-ray and browsing. I'll play around with it some more and maybe cancel the RMA because I do plan on fitting a custom cooler that'll not go above 65c.

Right I've never had a crash in 3d gaming but I have had a black screen and pc stop in 2D mode when watching tv and now this tonight as well as 'Ati driver has stopped working windows have recovered etc etc...' - what do the artifacts suggest guys bad vram?

ive had this! a few times, mainly black screens and driver stopped working! wish amd would sort a driver out!! ive tryd msi driver that came in the box and all the other drivers from amd.

by any chance are you guys mining and browsing/watching videos?

I only get this problem browsing and watching videos not in 3d gameplay I also don't mine I wouldn't dare mine with the stock cooler.

Is it a driver issue even when my pc stops working with all those artefacts?

I've still been having trouble with my card, never had a black screen crash during high intensity gaming such as BF4, but when I play DOTA2 I get random black screens which eventually recover, with the standard "display driver stopped responding" rubbish.

Once the PC recovers my memory clocks are locked at 150MHz untill I reboot the PC. This makes me think it is a driver issue rather than a faulty card issue, but I cant be sure.

Blah, well I'll add my problems in here as well.

I have 2 290's, both cards at stock and under water with core/vr temps below 50. My main problem over and above the black screen is the annoying sound break up I'm getting when crossfire is enabled. Sound, either passed through hdmi to my monitor or via a separate sound card to speakers breaks up whenever the card's go into 3D mode, but is fine outside of 3D, even to the point where it plays fine on a loading screen of a game, but not in the game itself. None of my issues are due to heat and I've tried a clean install of Win 7 & 8.

It's definitely a driver issue as dropping out of crossfire removes the problem, and I've tested each card on it's own with no sound problems.

Have had 1 black screen so far but that was with both cards o/c.

Very annoying as when they do work, the performance they give for the £££ is unmatched.

I believe now mine is a driver issue as I've had no crashes or black screens ever since I set up a custom fan profile to keep temps below 90c when gaming and 70c when browsing and watching videos. Therefore i'll not RMA even though ocuk didn't get back to me on my RMA anyways...

Iv had this black screen on two R9 290's and they both have the elpida ram chips.

If I drop the RAM clocks by 10% in CCC then the cards become stable and i can play BF4 for ages or run 3DMark.

On stock they are unusable and cannot get passed the first test of 3Dmark :(

I have posed in the customer support section with no answer as of yet, id like to return the one I got from OCUK and get one with Hyinx ram back >.< .... tho I have no idea if VTX ship cards with that RAM

Seeing as a lot of people brought from OcUK and are returning under RMA does anyone from OcUK themselves (Gibbo?) have anything to say on the subject.

I see them recommending them and reviewing them but surely an OcUK rep must have a view on this also having received RMA's back by now and testing the cards themselves...

OcUK have very close relations with AMD, so there wouldn't be any mention of it on the forums.

I agree that they probably won't comment due to their close relations but that's a pretty poor show for that reason only. They have had cards back, they should have had ample time now to test at least a good few RMA's and considering they have benched quite a few new ones too for reviews they know what to expect out of the cards.

It's not as if people are complaining about the overclocking potential here, the biggest complaint at present is black screening and crashing which the root cause seems to point to instability... at stock speeds...!

Its a poor show to be honest.

My theory is that Nvidia are buying forum accounts and posting fake stories about blackscreens and DOA cards.

There's no other explanation!!!

reducing clock and then stable - highly suggests hardware fault not driver/software issue - surely?

if was driver related - the clock speed of the VRAM shouldn't make any difference
