Why is there still a DVI connector on Nvidia reference cards?

Ha i don't think this thread has gone as OP expected.

Still use DVI here.

Really? I asked why it's still in use. I have my answer.

I personally think there should be one or two thunderbolt ports on the back of a GPU and that be it. But no vendor dare make that move for a few years yet I imagine.

And if people can't take a joke they shouldn't be on an Internet forum.

DVI is still on Nvidia cards because it means you can use a DVI-I to VGA adapter to connect a VGA monitor, it's that simple.

The reason the new AMD card has dropped DVI is because the 290 dropped VGA support making the DVI port redundant.

For those that don't know, a DVI port/cable is essentially (but not literally) a combined VGA/HDMI port/cable, you can use DVI to/from HDMI adaptors just like you could DVI to VGA adapters, once the VGA support is dropped from a card then the DVI port just become large bulky HDMI ports.

Your question was loaded in the opposite direction to the outcome though, therefore the answer is not what you thought/expected.

So yes, really :p.

But the answer is wrong, this thread makes it sound like DVI is in high demand when in reality Nvidia could drop DVI tomorrow and ship the cards with a 2p HDMI-DVI adapter and nobody would be hurt by it apart from the handful of people using VGA only monitors as second screens.

Finally, some sense. Thank you.

I would be annoyed by any card that didn't have DVI and it would prompt me to look for alternatives.

I am using dvi also and imo it would be better to scrap hdmi and dp from a 980 ti making the card single slot for all us dvi users :)

It would be cheaper also i imagine.

You will hate the new AMD card and probably Nvidia's next (or the one after that).

Does it also annoy you that Floppy drives don't come as standard on computers anymore. DVI is a 90's interface that is redundant in 2015, let it go.

Or they could just include 2p adapters with the cards that let you connect your DVI cable to a HDMI port...

When monitors first started using HDMI, DVI was still preferable because some of them behaved differently when used with HDMI (e.g. different colour spaces or refresh rates supported). I don't know how true that still is but I use DVI on my 6 year old monitor.

DisplayPort should be preferable in all cases but it is still not as widely supported.

DisplayPort (mini) all the way, after finding out that my U2515H's can't run at native res over DVI -> HDMI cables I couldn't be bothered.

Also using MST which is a nice feature. Although if I knew about that before I wouldn't have had to search for a card with multiple mini DisplayPorts.

Still it's nice to have them as they're tiny and you can fit loads more on a GPU.

"Who still uses DVI?"

Just about everyone, by the looks of things!
I switched from using DP back to DVI, although I don't actually remember exactly why! I think I was either having issues with desktop icons re-arranging or it conflicted with my lightboost settings.

It's not even like adaptors a cheap or anything, to go from dp to dvi 1440/1080@120+ you're looking at a £70 adaptor.

Still a fan of dvi, I use it on my second monitor :)

If you look at the current Nvidia line up, they all have DVI connectors on the back of the cards:

Now I'm by no means an expert in cooling, but would binning off that connector and the associated electronics create more room for airflow which would increase the performance of the reference coolers on Nvidia cards?

Who still uses DVI? It's dated now isn't it? Most people are on display port, and if DVI is a must, then there are adapters available.

Thoughts?

They could save as much space by changing the DP ports to mini DP ports as well. Being using DP only since November and it seems pretty ropey compared to the DVI

That's one that's capable of VGA output, a regular DP-DVI adapter is much much cheaper and included with some cards, a HDMI-DVI adaptor is pennies and included with even more cards.
