Why would anyone use Windows?

For Gods sake man, it's not about messing up your precious Linux. It's about change and choice. Ultimately there could be a Linux Distro that will be marketed with problems ironed out, probably more streamlined regarding the amount of software included, better driver support and the basics would work on it no probs. There will always be other distros out there for people to tweak and develop.
This is not about "my precious linux" this is about Linux in general. Linux has always been the epitome of open source. "For the people, by the people" and nothing more. If it starts heading in a direction soley because it wants to conquer, it'll be another marketing driven platform that will have the same flaws as the existing, of which sits on top is Windows.

How can Linux 'head in one direction'? Surely the entire point of having lots of distros is that it can head in lots of directions at once?

How can it be "For the people" if they find it confusing, have hardware problems and can't use programs (or equivalents) they're used to on Windows?

And what "flaws" does Windows have that have anything to do with marketing?

You're not understanding what I'm saying at all. There will always be other Linux distros. IBM are working with Ubuntu, so if that ends up being marketed as a major alternative to MS then great.

I'll give you an example of exactly why people (e.g. I) use Windows.

OK... I take my whinging back. Posting from Linux :D

I managed to get an internet connection on my PC (forwarded it from my laptop!) As for the compiling nightmare - what I'd overlooked was that I could simply go into the 'driver manager' and choose the wireless driver from the list of proprietary drivers. When I did so, Ubuntu automatically installed the driver, then downloaded the correct firmware for my wireless card along with a 'cutter' program to extract it. It then automatically integrated the firmware with the driver and brought up my wireless card, which is working perfectly.

That was quite an ingenious one-click install. I'm impressed.

For the people who contribute.
And what "flaws" does Windows have that have anything to do with marketing?
Microsoft would rather the market came to a plato of sticking with what they have. Everything they release as "new" is in fact old hat and catching up with everything else. Their first flaw. They are trying to shape the market to suit them, and not adapt to the market as they should. Second flaw. The list goes on.

I don't look at it as "Distro for this, Distro for that"

Distro's are nothing more than collaborations of software. There's nothing by the Ubuntu group that is actually written by them, it's all stuff packaged together. They are also infact a fork of Debian.

That wasn't what I was saying. Why don't you want a version of Linux out there as competition to Windows?
Because it has never been a competition as far as Linux is concerned. It's difficult for me to explain, because I'm crap at explaining, but the purpose of Linux has never been to conquer or even compete. It is simply there, and people are welcome to use it.

I think what DJ is alluding too, and I may be assuming wrongly here, is the Linux ethos that you can take or leave things. Change or not change. Run or not run. Leave compiled or remove and recompile. Share or not share. Fix or not fix. Reinvent or reuse.

And not kick down anybody's door or take over any market share percentage, to just try to be good software.

Bingo, thanks :)

That's certainly not the Ubuntu ethos (in terms of competing) and good on them. I think any distro that wants to compete should be encouraged. A straight forward, user friendly system that can be customized (easily) and performs better than Windows would be great. And it doesn't matter if Ubuntu were to become big in the commercial world, there are other versions of Linux.

apt-get install xmms

(you can even use winamp skins.)

Already tried that.

Failed due to xmms not being supported anymore.

I have however been using xmms since Mandrake 6 so its bee na few years but why they should stop supporting it, I dont know?

Whats even more stupid, is that if you look in the ubuntu supositories... Sorry... REpositories, it gives you a load of add-ons from xmms2 ?

So WTF is that all about?

Try Beep Media Player, its better than xmms, basically the same thing but works better with newer gnome releases.

failing that i like Exaile too.

Surely this is the same age old argument about, bespoke vs generic software.
Bespoke can be taylored to exactly what the user wants but is often more comlpex and advanced.
Generic offers a flat base of tools that the majority of people can and will be able to use easily..

Yes, but Im of the "If it aint broke" group.

I like XMMS and I use WinAmp on my Windows PCs... I still use the classic black skin too! - sure, I have tried many other skins, but of all the skins that I used on my WinAmp, the one that I used the most... Is unbelievably... The xmms skin!!! - How sad is that?

To use the skin of xmms which is a clone of winamp, on the genuine winamp to make it look like xmms pretending to be WinAmp???!?!?!??

I suppose the dislike for too much change, goes a long way to explain why, that even though I own over a dozen PCs and have extended my house just to keep all my PCs, that I still do all my real work on my 20 year old Ataris.
