Why would police need to know?

Ahhh.....lets make a tough job even tougher! Excellent, this is what i like to see.

The police aren't doing much of a job if they don't even know what they're looking for, and can't state the crime someone is suspected of.

No really, it isn't hard. 'Sir, you match X description of a thief spotted at X place X time, so we're going to ask you some questions.'

I would say it would be pretty stupid of them to go around telling everyone what crime their investigating without prior authority, also if the person they're speaking to has no need to know what happened why should they tell them?

If someones wearing a hooded top then there's a good chance it's hidden the persons face from any cameras/witnesses hence the lack of description. Maybe they should make it illegal to wear a hood...

Ever seen Crimestoppers?

So you can be accused of something without being told what it is, even after giving up your details. Lovely country eh...

There's more than just the face to consider.

As opposed to keeping crime hush-hush?

I get it all the time. I was walking back from a mates house, no more than 200 yards away when I got stopped. They wanted to know where I was going at 2am dressed in black. I just told them that it was none of their business, and I'd only answer if the told me where they were going at 2am dressed all in black first.

Wow you're so cool.

No personal attacks

Yes of course you did.

Internet bravado at its best.

Actually, yes I did and no it isn't internet bravado!

It's not as if I'm some teenager up to mischief is it, I'm a bloke in his mid-thirties and was doing nothing more than walking down the street to my house minding my own business! Why should I have to answer any questions posed by the police when I haven't been cautioned and/or arrested? They have no right to question me without cautioning me first!

Is it some how illegal to walk down the street at night now?

i almost tried that once but.. woulda ended up in the back of the car for drunk and disorderly if i didnt co-operate :(

"its simple sonny answer the questions or its a night in the cell .. totally your choice"

It's not just a PNC check, sometimes you are asked questions like that just so the copper can observe your response, if you fluff the answer or hesitate, chances are you'll be trying to hide something, so they'll be able to "probe" you :p

Cheeky bugger. :D

I often just tell them the truth, it's easier unless you're upto something...

I've also got asked where I was born, I didn't really think much of it... I also got asked about scars and tattoo's... which was sorta random.
U dont have to tell them anything unless your a suspect for a crime, not even our own name.
What about those new terrorism laws? That's the reason I got stopped and searched... Perhaps it was all the wires I had for my headphones.

If you actually read the part you quoted you'll see that I said without prior authority.

I don't think anyone said they were accused, just questioned. If the police are told that someone wearing a hooded top recently committed a crime in an area and then they see someone matching that description in the area it doesn't really do any harm to speak to that person. If they'd carted him off in the police car for interrogation at the station based solely on that description I would agree that they'd gone too far. I don't want to live in a society where the police are too afraid to talk to anyone for fear they might hurt their feelings thank you very much!

There's more than just the face to consider.

Well that's hardly the police fault! They can only go on what they are told!!!

I'm not sure how that is relevant to the text you quoted. But you should know that when investigating a crime the police don't reveal all the details. A lot of facts are kept quiet until the person/people in charge of the investigation decide what would be in the best interests of catching the criminal/doesn't compromise peoples privacy.

At least you knew they were police officers...

I was followed down a street after midnight by a car (going the wrong way down a one way street). 4 people who looked mega dodgy were in the car and said "mate can you come over here please, we're the police". No ID or anything... I said no thanks and carried on walking. They followed me again so I pegged it home

we found out later (after calling the police, that they were for real).
