Why would police need to know?

U dont have to tell them anything unless your a suspect for a crime, not even our own name.

No, but if you've done nothing wrong then what's wrong with just telling them what you're doing? All these people showing how "cool" they've been by not co-operating with the police are pathetic, they provide a public service and as has been shown recently put their lives on the line to do so.

Show some bloody respect.

EDIT: Not necessarily aimed at you uknowist, you just had the most appropriate post to quote.

I agree with the barney dinosaur above. These guys have a ahrd enough job now that half the country are hooded hooligans. If these hoody people came and smashed up your car wouldnt yuo want the police to stop and question any hooden people in the area?

Completely agree. I really don't get this 'Im so cool, I just tell the cops to get lost' attitude. I swear people just say it to get a rise.

I've also got asked where I was born, I didn't really think much of it... I also got asked about scars and tattoo's... which was sorta random.
The police has a database called Visor. It stores information about everything. Scars, tattoos, friends, accomplices, partners, medical records, edication, photos, CCTV records, passport information, banking, pets ... literally everything about you that you would ever imagine.

They also cagegorise you into 5 groups. From a dangerous offender, to a slightly suspect non-convicted person.

This system was brought in after the Soham murders. It allows police to be able to narrow down a suspect, even if they havent been formally charged previously and only have very sketchy details.

Unlikely that they were using VISOR, it's really just for use for violent or sex offenders, and they wouldn't likely have access to it on the street. They most likely asked for scars/tattoos, as once a name check had been done there was probably more than one person with the same name on PNC and they wanted to check if your marks/scars matched the person they were interested in, ie someone who's wanted etc.

Oh no. They certainly can't use Visor on the street. Its a highly restricted tool. Beleive me, I have to set it up through our department.

I was just mentioned it because it stores information like scars and tattoo's as identifying information.

The worrying thing is, the OP could have just given them any name, address, DOB, POB and the Police would be none the wiser

Oh and btw, I find this one simple rule is invaluable for avoiding being stopped by the police: don't dress like a thug.

I was thinking the OPs details may have been placed on CRIMINT once they got back to the station.

I get it all the time. I was walking back from a mates house, no more than 200 yards away when I got stopped. They wanted to know where I was going at 2am dressed in black. I just told them that it was none of their business, and I'd only answer if the told me where they were going at 2am dressed all in black first.

Yes of course you did.

Internet bravado at its best.

They ask expected normal things like name(with middle name requested too), age(D.O.B requested too), address and contact number. Her partner fumbling to write down all this in the short time im telling them. Then she asks me where I was born. Thinking nothing of it at the time I tell them.

Standard things on stop forms, apart from place of birth and contact number.

Place of birth is only really needed when there are 2 PNC matches, for eg, two Dave Smiths, both born on the 4th July 78. The place of birth will usually seperate them.

They have no right to know...don't tell them anything.

What?

Imagine you have been robbed at knifepoint, you tell the police that it was a w/m wearing a black hoody and jeans with light coloured shoes.

10mins later the police stop someone matching that description, but have to let him go as they have no right to know.

What happens if I’m stopped and searched?

If you are stopped you’ll first be asked where you’re going and what you’ve been doing. The police may then decide to search you but only if they have a good reason, for example, that you fit the profile of a criminal seen in the area, or they think you’re acting suspiciously.
Here are some facts about stop and search:

-the search will take place on the street
-if the officer asks you to remove more than your coat and gloves, or anything you wear for religious reasons, they must take you somewhere out of public view
you’ll be asked to turn out your pockets and show the officers the contents of your bag
-they can also search your vehicle, even if you aren’t present, but they must leave a notice to say what they’ve done
-if you’re carrying something illegal, such as a weapon, or the police believe you’ve committed a crime, you may be arrested
-if they don’t find anything, your details will be recorded for monitoring purposes, and you’ll be allowed to go
