Why you SHOULD be using Firefox

If you're not a fan of the latest (I think it looks bloody terrible) visual enhancement from Firefox 89 you can still use about:config, search Proton and disable it to get back "normal" sized tabs etc but the bloody horrible purple tinged "dark mode" still stays, rather than the previous black.

I actually really like the new Proton design. I enabled it through about:config ages ago, and think it looks nice and slick with the dark theme and in Compact mode. When they fully remove the latter, I'm going to have to look at custom CSS.

As above, they're really trying to simplify FF to attract normal users but I doubt even this new redesign will work.

Just remembered SSB was removed a few version ago, so unfortunately I still have to rely on Edge for PWAs. And I also noticed the dark theme is a bit purplish...

My shield/padlock etc... icons look like this now. :p

Ah yes I had not yet updated FF :p Now updated!

ONly annoyance now is that they have changed the style of the new tab screen showing you top sites as I use that page as a quick nav to my most visited sites. Before all the squares had the website thumbnail as the background with a small favicon logo for each one which was all nicely packed into a grid, now there's a massive spaced out whackness to it and the thumbs are gone which looks crap!

I'd be fine if I could just get them closer together in a nice neat grid again...

Yeah the old style New Tab screen was better imo, the logos look tiny on those big tiles now, and the spacing between thems too big.

Going on this bugzilla post it seems they'll be removing that workaround at some point in the 90 releases, i suspect their removing much of the old stuff to make coding easier (less time/money) going forward.

It may make their job easier but trying to find the userChrome.css tweaks to undo this pony & trap is a right PITA.

Biggest issues for me with proton UI is no supported compact mode (just stupid, I want the websites not menus taking up my screen), no real contrast or hierarchy to the design so it all just 'blends' (I use the light theme) and in all honesty the 'floaty rounded boxes' looks really dated imo.

I even enabled 'tracking' just so they could see me turn off proton in about:config and then install (ironically) the edge light theme so I could actually get some contrast and usability back.... I've said it before but there will be a point when I just bite the bullet and switch browsers, likely to MS edge....

@mrk take a look at new tab tools. It's what I use for my new tab and it should be able to do what you want imo.

Having a play more around it, address bar/bookmark bar size on normal density is fine, but the tabs definitely looks better in compact mode. Comparing the normal density tab size to Edge and Chrome, it's still uncomfortably tall.

I was getting odd jankiness with smooth scrolling as well, turning on general.smoothScroll.msdPhysics.enabled in about:config fixed it.

Mine is actually smoother with it set to false (default) - I do have an MX Master 3 though and have smooth scroll in FF settings turned on too.

The weird thing is it's better when set to off on my work PC. I'm guessing hardware differences affects it? An old AMD 5670 on the work PC vs the 3070 at home. I remember off being completely fine on my 1080 Ti though.
