Who is to say that an alien race could obliterate us in any way? Just because they can travel between the stars doesn't mean they have death rays, and photon torpedos. They may not have the ability to construct such massive weapons and are forced to use weapons similar in nature to our own missiles and guns?
People seem to naturally assume that if they can travel far, that they can also blow up loads of **** too. While it may seem to be a logical assumption that a species with the technological ability to move such distances could also produce such devastating firepower, it is a flawed assumption simply based on human perceptions of the progression of technology. Simply because as we become better at travelling, the better we become at blowing **** up, doesn't mean an alien race will.

They won't admit this publically but all space shuttle missions since 1987 have been "hot" (i.e. armed). In the mid 90s during my time the in the US Delta Seal Commandos I was attached to NASA as a gunner on several shuttle missions and during two of those missions we incurred hostile contact with UFOs in earth orbit. In fact they were responsibility for the challenger disaster which is what prompted the policy change in the first place.
I can vouch that everything Macgik has said is completely legit and truthful. I can tell you all this becauise the CIA cant do *** to me since I lost my top secret clearance in 2002 (dishonorably discharged due to substance addiction).
