Wildstar New MMO (NCSoft and Carbine Studios)

This game looks it to me. A buddy of mine met a few of the devs at a tech/game event (I can't remember which) and the devs assured him it wasn't aimed at casual gamers and had some elements from core gamers and lots of traditionally loved things combined with some whacky innovation. He said to expect similarities to Vanilla WoW loved features - 40 man raids and high community play. To be honest I'm looking forward to this game and its individuality. Classes that aren't just about grinding mobs which will break up the gameplay for me. House customization (Man the last game I invested time into housing was Everquest 2 and I spent most of the time I was playing just perfecting my house).

I was determined to dislike this, based on the wow-esque art style. But I gotta say, those last few videos are weakening my resolve :)

I know what you mean, the more i read the more interested in this game i get, it sounds like wow meets gw2, i read today you can capture raid bosses and use them to fight for you in the GvG thing (whatever it's called)

Is there any info out there regarding whether its sub/f2p? Additionally are there any combat videos/info out there?

It actually sounds rather interesting but on a negative note its only 2 faction pvp in battlegrounds which completely sucks. GW2 has shown the direction (obviously there were MMO's similar before) for pvp, 3 faction and leader boards which match good and bad servers. Stops killing servers and pops by demoralising people.

Plus I want combat info, if its stand and bang wow style I won't bother. If questing is fixed (kill them rampaging centaurs who have been stood still for the past 2 years of the game looking disinterested) I won't bother either.

Gw2 has spoiled a lot of other MMO's for me :p

They haven't released any info on sub or not, hopefully they go down the GW2 route of b2p with a cash shop of some sort. They are looking at other MMO's play options though.

There is a Dev vid up that shows they have your basic WASD movement with a GW2 style dodge mechanic (also a short term sprint) and some sort of directional healing I believe.

I don't think it's a standard WoW clone, more incorperating the better aspects of GW2 (but with the 'holy trinity' I think), into an involving world. Hell there is one path (think profession) that can create outposts that have inn's, repair stations, quest givers etc.

Out of the 4 *big* MMO's left in dev to it's probably the one I'm most looking forward to (Wildstar, ArcheAge, TESO + EQ:N).

had a bit more of a look at some dev videos and damn, check out the player housing vid thats up on their website. Looks rather good, and I really like where they appear to be taking that aspect.

Keeping an eye on this one myself also - a deal clincher for me will be how much of the game is instanced. So far the housing and paths are by the looks of it, which I dislike already.

I can understand that instanced content is easier on severs etc, but the whole "personal" aspect is a massive cop-out I feel. To me the fundamental idea of "MMO" was always that games were getting bigger/more collaborative, with more community interaction - but newer MMOs are feeling smaller with your own isolated content. Give me an MMO where you'll build towns with people and fight for land any day, enough of the battlegrounds, instances and instanced housing.

Yeah that kind of sucks :(

I used to like walking around SWG houses that people set to open, you could get some interesting ideas from how they setup their homes.

They need to learn how to stitch environments over many servers to spread the load out so they all can be in the same instance. Raids and Dungeons I have no issue with but Quests, public events and Housing needs to be in one instance.

Apparently housing can be open to no one, just your friends/guildmates or everyone (I think you get benefits the more people visit your house).

Regarding instancing vs open world - personally I would love a mixture of both, huge open world dungeons that everyone can crawl through and instances for when I just want to knock stuff out with friends/guildies without the hassle of spawn camping etc.

MMO's are much bigger now compared to 'back in the day' and griefing is far more prevelent compared to then.

Well, saying paths are instanced is a bit generic, a lot we've seen so far are not. Some are exlusive to the open world.

There are some that are because the have to be, absolutely and unquestionably unless you want to fight over areas vs players that essentially are on your side. This isn't exclusive to Wildstar, it's an MMO thing.

We have to accept that there are a lot more people interested in these games and the technology to realistically host all of them on one area does not exist, or it does and it's not cost effective. Ontop of having your gaming experience ruined or delayed because other people are fighting over something rather than GW2's "Everyone is an asset, instead of Ugh another player is near me".

But yeah, my first proper MMO experience did not have instances in the open world and it was very rare you'd see a dungeon kick over into a second playfield which required pretty much all interested parties on all three factions to turn up :p Good times.
