Will jogging get you fit?

You will see a difference in a couple of weeks, its pacing yourself if your jogging on the roads thats hard, if you have a heart rate monitor you can see if your pushing yourself, as its quite easy to not do it on the roads (easier to do on a treadmill).

Yes it will get you fit but knacker your knees up in years to come, speed walking is far more safer.

Swimming is even safer then that :)

Could always make a home made exercise bike because cycling doesn't seem bad :D

Sounds like i'm best signing up for a gym or go on a pay as you go.
Running on a treadmill is as boring as The Rik Waller Monologues. Just get some decent running shoes and hit the streets / parks / woods. There's no set distance you need to run, it all depends on the intensity you run at - if you find yourself getting too tired too quickly, slow down. If your goal is fat loss, do a google on HIIT. Enjoy.

May I point you in the direction of runnersworld.co.uk. Tonnes of advise on running there, especially for beginners. And like here it has a lovely forum, though being a bunch of weirdos they don't talk about computers much.

Concrete plus knees = bad
Mud plus knees = good

*Looks around for a mud road* :(

Guess I could do laps of the local park lol. What people have said about getting bad knees in a few years really worried me, I thought that was only after 10-20 years of intensive running on roads that could happen.

Is skipping bad for your knees? I do that sometimes although I can only skip in sets of 50 because i've only just started exercising for the first time in my life.

My mate said to me the other day that jogging and skipping before breakfast everyday is the best way to tone up (ie lose fat).

I always say what was running and walking designed for?

We were designed to run when hunting and to avoid danger, walking was designed to get us from A-B.

Therefore I say jogging is an unnatural form of exercise :)

If you build up correctly, i.e. don't do too much too soon, then your knees will adapt and get used to the running. Think about marathon runners and ultramarathon runners, many of the older ones have been running long distances all their lives. Don't think that just because you go out running a couple of times a week for a few months that you'll be in a wheelchair for the rest of your life!!!

My dad used to run quite a bit (but not massively, I think he did a few half-marathons in his time) and his knees are pretty bad now. Thats the main thing thats put me off jogging/running to be honest.

Well, that and the fact that I think cycling's much more fun. Only problem is if you're doing it to keep fit then you have to go up and down hill constantly as otherwise you can go all day!

I used to do quite a bit of running, but I haven't recently other than at the gym (as well as cross trainers, rowing machine etc) because of a leg length discrepancy I found I had. I have to wear a sole on my shoes, and was told that excessive running would put further strain on my hip.

Running is ok to get fit, but fitness is relative. It may lower your bodyfat levels, and strengthen your heart and lungs but fitness is sport/event specific so its best if you can do a few things like swim, lift weights and a bit of running/rowing etc.
