Will Smith hits Chris Rock on Oscars stage

I wonder what would happen if, in a few days time, a member of public upset by something said by one of those who were clapping for Smith as he accepted his award afterwards, slapped that person in the street saying that, as their victim was applauding a person minutes after they'd used violence over words, it must mean that the victim must also approve of using violence over words, in which case the victim would have to accept being slapped without complaint?

I'm actually surprised that more "stars" haven't come out in defence of Rock if only to help protect themselves from the few people/idiots who may now think it's OK to slap a Hollywood "star" using the excuse of "well, Will Smith did it without issue" etc.

"Academy initiates 'disciplinary proceedings' against Will Smith over Oscars incident - CNN" https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2022/03/30/entertainment/academy-will-smith/index.html

"Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy's Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy," the organization behind the Oscars said in a statement.

The statement also claims that Smith was asked to leave the ceremony after the incident "and refused." The Academy said it recognizes "we could have handled the situation differently."

Interesting if true.

I think they are all 'afraid' of being black-listed by 'Hollywood' so are keeping quiet. Typical Hollywood stuff tbh

it could have made it worse, to have live TV cameras showing will smith getting dragged out kicking and screaming by the LAPD

I doubt it would have been in the public view, a lot of those buildings they host these in have internal parking areas. Just a matter of rolling a car in, sticking him in it and driving out again.

They asked him to leave. He didn't. They leave it there.

Looks OK on the academy as people understand the situation is difficult. They should follow up on this though, which appears they are.

They ask him to leave. He doesn't. They call cops, drag him out.

Looks terrible in the academy. Not a good light.

I get why they did what they did

LOL as if they don't have security & police specifically there for the event. they presumably didn't want to drag him out because of optics if that part is even true but it's super weak.

I don't believe for a second that if a random person tried to charge that stage they wouldn't have had security immediately rush in, it's the celebrity status that allowed him to get on stage, etc.. ("maybe he's doing something funny?") and the cause debate about what to do after when it turned out he'd just slapped a presenter.

There isn't much they can (edit - reasonably*) do after the event, then can maybe ban him from turning up next year or something but really it should have just been a case of simply kicking him out if Chris didn't want to press charges. He doesn't get to do an acceptance speech because of his foolish behaviour.

*kicking him out of the Academy itslef would be a bit OTT considering that has previously been reserved for sex offenders etc.. taking back the award would be dubious too. Suspend him/ban him next year I guess... should have just kicked him out of the event himself, the fact he was able to make a speech and get a round of applause after seems ridiculous.
