Windows 10 FAQ

Plus, you dont enter 'Any' product key!! Skip when it asks. It will activate automatically if done properly

You need to upgrade from a valid Windows 7/8/8.1 installation first, in order to magically transform your key to a Windows 10 one. Then you can clean install Windows 10.

Faqqing read the faq. :p

It seems like a needlessly contrived method, but it looks like I will have to give it a try. Presumably those with brand new HD's and a copy of win7/8 would have to follow the same proceedure? Install win7, download and create bootable iso, upgrade, boot from disk, format partition and then sorted...?

Yes, because the offer is a free UPGRADE to Windows 10. There's no real need to do a clean install. You can 'Reset this PC' once upgraded.

Yes, as its a upgrade you cant do a clean install without going from a previous OS first as this tags your hardware\key usable with W10

this is what I did.

install W7 retail and activated.

download the ISO (windows 10 home 64 bit) and ran the setup.exe from the ISO (extracted to a folder using 7 zip)

once upgraded and OS activated I did a clean install of W10 using a USB stick and then skipped the two stages where it asks for a key. once installed again W10 activated once internet working.

Did you check the ISO Hash to make sure it was not corrupt? The program i used to create the hash is linked in OP.

Yep, checked and re-downloaded incase.

use the Microsoft tool to download W10 as it can make a USB stick as well as a ISO file

does sound like a issue with the download\files so use the tool and create a USB stick version, should sort the issue

Tried this last night with still the same end result.

Just tried the stick from creating with the MS download tool in the other 1/2s laptop and it reconised it straight away so for some reason my PC fails to see it correctly. :(

Here are some tweaks of my own that I've ran on a virtual machine with no known issues. To be perfectly honest, these are mostly the first thing I do on Windows 8.1 installations, but they seem to work equally as well for Windows 10.

I run the following commands from within Powershell and they will get uninstall most of the apps, gaining you free space as a bonus!
Code:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -online | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -online

To disable the below services, you will need open the Start Menu and type in: gpedit.msc to load the Group Policy Editor.

To disable OneDrive, navigate to the following: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > OneDrive then double click "Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage", choose Enabled, then apply.

To disable OneDrive, navigate to the following: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender then double click "Turn Off Windows Defender", choose Enabled, then apply.

That's more of an advert for the search function. Just right click on the drive and get to disk cleanup the normal way!!
