Windows 10 FAQ

Can someone clarify how long I have to upgrade my PC which is currently running W8.1? I've upgraded my secondary PC so that I can gauge the performance of W10, but I want to hold off from upgrading the main machine until Microsoft has ironed out the hundreds of bugs and issues that have been and are still to be found.

TIA

^ MS said as long as you upgrade within 12 months the upgrade is free "for the lifetime of the device". I'm guessing you have until July 2016 in that case.

one year from release date of W10 so started on the 29th of July.

Use a W10 ISO to clean install and then rather than activate, tick the 'use insider previews' box, which then asks for your MSA?

Morning morning!

Windows 10 update on my surface pro 3 was easy enough, with things slowly being updated as i've had some buggy issues with the touchscreen in certain programs!

However... I've lost one note! It wont start past the purple screen , just loads and doesnt do anything else, not a single menu comes visible just a blank purple screen. I've googled all over the shop on how to remove the app but cant seem to find a specific method?

I have tried uninstalling office 365 , but the app is still there, does anyone know how i go about re-installing the app specifically, so i can try again?

Isn't one note now an embedded part of the OS? Explains why it doesn't remove when you u install 365.

Have you tried doing the Refresh PC option from Settings (Refresh not Reset, as this keeps all your programs and documents but performs a repair on the Windows files).

I've had a search of this thread so apologies if I'm repeating a previously answered question.

I have a brand new HDD ready to go into my PC, is it possible to upgrade with the current HDD then install the new drive and do a clean install?

Or should I install the new drive and install windows 8.1 first and then upgrade that to windows 10?

if you have windows 7 SP1 or 8.1 installed on your current HDD do the upgrade on this. make sure your W 8.1 or W7 is activated before the upgrade and check it again once W10 is installed.

once W10 is activated on your current HDD remove it and put in your new one (leave your old drive disconnected till W10 is fully installed), get the ISO file and create a USB stick with W10 on, install W10 and press skip to the two sections asking for a product key and you should be good to go

I went from W7 to 10 on my SSD and then once activated I formatted and done a W10 install from a USB stick with no issues, once the PC was on the desktop and had internet access it activated as well

I swapped my motherboard and now Windows 10 requires re-activation. Not accepting my original windows 7 key. anyone else in the same situation? Shall I give Microsoft a call?

can try and give them a call, other option would be to install W7 and do the upgrade process again providing your original W7 was retail

It won't do as you upgraded to a OEM windows 10 licence linked to your mobo. So that's used now.

Will be interesting to hear what they say if you ring them! I am planning on replacing my mobo/cpu this year so this will be an issue for me.
