Windows 10 FAQ

You can also give the key to Microsoft and they will let you know if it can be transferred or not using the latest build rules of activating with previous keys.

I've been putting it off for a while and now thinking of upgrading, not sure about some things though.

The manufacturer website for my motherboard only lists the audio drivers for Windows 10 and nothing else. Will Windows 7 drivers work?

http://www.msi.com/product/motherboard/support/P67AGD65_B3.html#down-driver&Win10 64

If I upgrade my current Win7 install (on a HDD) can I then do a clean install on a different drive (ssd) on the same system/motherboard?

When doing a Win7 to 10 upgrade, are your directories and file structure/locations unchanged?

There is defiantly no reason NOT to upgrade to W10 now.

There are a few reasons - for my typical usage Windows 10's automatic updates has a habit of periodically force rebooting the system which isn't acceptable with what I do - and currently the only way to disable that means doing nasty things to the OS which potentially means I'm running the system unsecure more than is necessary.

Also had to revert 1-2 people to Windows 8 as since the 1511 update for some reason it keeps forcing a bad driver on their system every time there is a new Windows update despite every attempt to tell it not to.

(Personally I find 10 aesthetically pretty awful compared to 7 as well so wouldn't choose it to look at for long periods at the PC).

I've found Windows 7 and 8 drivers largely work on 10 but there are some exceptions - sound drivers seem to be a little problematic at times and some network drivers have issues with security permissions or memory leaks.

Tried to search the thread but could not, due to my android keyboard always dissappearing.

My question, in windows 7 in windows explorer you could arrange your photos by day, month, year. I have searched google but only one result came up but not sure if that is true or not. So how can I view my photos by arrange like in win 7?

You can group in win 10 but it groups them with titles of "taken last week" or "taken a while ago" which is not that helpful, as I want the date to be shown.

Thanks in advance,

Tim

^^ Click on advanced search or have the keyboard up before trying to type in the search box (not possible on all devices).

Windows 10 has a whole range of sort options so it should be possible though it might take a little bit of work to make it do it as sometimes it thinks you want to do something a bit different.

thanks for the tip.

found out how to do what I wanted. For anyone who is wondering you have show your Libraries in the file explorer and view your photos in there, then you can use the "Arrange by" by right clicking . saves me using the program "photo" as it was too slow.

Sorry if this has been asked before but can windows update be completely disabled in 10 in the services section? I have it disabled in 7 and enable it once a month the day after patch Tuesday to manually search for updates, download them and then disable it again. Is this possible in 10?

The only way to fully disable Windows Update in 10 requires 3rd party software/scripts and has a fair few potential side effects. Some security updates will be pushed through regardless unless you take more drastic steps as well for instance you can set all your connections as metered connections - but then that means if you actually need functionality that distinguishes between metered and unmetered connections you are a bit stuck.

Am I correct in thinking/reading that when doing a fresh windows 10 install on new hardware from an ISO, we can now use our windows 7/8 keys to activate it?

I assume a fresh install of W10 with the same hardware, activates using their stored license key system?

Guess I will be sticking to 7 then unless they give us more control over 10, which I can't see happening anytime soon.

I'll probably eventually end up dual booting on my gaming PC - for a number of reasons the OS automatically updating and restarting of its own accord simply does not work for my uses so I have no choice regardless of what I think of the OS.

I'm wondering if anyone can help me, I have searched high an low for an option to disable automatic downloads when using edge but cant find an answer except that it can't be done. does anyone on here know how to change it?

I want to get an option to save as when I download a file its pain in the ass when I download my uni content and have to keep moving the files from one place to another. If its not possible what browser is recommended for windows 10 that allows me to do this?

Thanks

So you can choose the folder for each download? Chrome and Firefox both allow this. It may not be the default option but you can change it in the options.
