Windows 10 FAQ

latest version from the dell website, have you got your task view setting as stacked?? right click on the task view and see what options you have
When I click on that I get the same menu as if I right click on the task bar. I see nowhere to change anything from stacked to any other option.

Hi,
If this was asked already I apologies for not reading whole thread..
I have installed preview version after it was released.
I knew that I will have to reinstall back to 7 in order to get full 10.
sometime ago there was a big update to the preview 10- felt like full new install, and few things have changed.
My question is - was that just some big update or was it a update to full 10 ?
I think it will be the latter but better to ask :)
Thanks

strange I see .cascade windows, show windows stacked, show windows side by side and show the desktop
Oh sorry. I see what you mean now. Yes I do get those options. :)

I tried the side by side without MediaMonkey opened and found everything worked. Chrome and Firefox, Firefox and Word all worked perfectly. There's something about MediaMonkey that's stopping the side by side option from working properly. I guess I need to wait for MediaMonkey to be updated to a build that officially supports Windows 10.

I couldn't find a specific FAQ covering this so apologies in advance if it has been.

Is the issue with upgrading components/mobo/system after having upgraded to Win 10 from Win 7 (or 8) now clarified? i.e. we may upgrade our PCs without fear of our licences being reverted to OEM-type ones.

Yes as I did it last night when I changed my motherboard/CPU etc

If you change any hardware which results in windows getting deactivated with error code ending C003 I think it is, then you can ring/use the app to get in touch with Microsoft and advise them that you wish to generate a windows 10 key and replace whatever key the original OS had before upgrading to windows 10.

However...you will need to tell a white lie.

It took me two attempts last night, first one the person said a motherboard change was too much of a significant change and they wouldn't give me a key for windows 10.

Second person, I told that I updated my bios and it deactivated and I got my windows 10 key.

It is in the EULA also.

I am sure that you are aware that this (as well as other) threads on here are regularly monitored by the Microsoft Secret Police, so you can expect a visit from a gang of 'heavies' shortly.

You might just be lucky though, and they will only chop off one or two of your fingers! :D

Haha! Its all good, I already have my key :P

Guide: Coloured title bars

Hi All,

I posted this before but posting again as I redid my theme files and got a better result.

This theme mod allows for coloured title bars that you can then set via the colours screen in personalisation. Also, if you have the colour change setup for wallpaper based - it changes it as well.

I followed this guide:
C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

Select the “aero” folder and create a copy in the same directory - press “Yes” when prompted by UAC and press “Skip” when asked to make changes to some specific files. Once the copying is done, rename “aero - Copy” (or whatever name you used) to “windows.”

Open the new “windows” folder and rename “aero.msstyles“ to “windows.msstyles.” Next, open the “en-US” folder in the newly created “windows” folder and rename “aero.msstyles.mui” file to “windows.msstyles.mui.”

Go back to the main themes folder and create a copy of the “aero.theme” file and rename the copy to “windows.theme.” Right-click the new windows.theme file, open it with Notepad and look for the following line in the [VisualStyles] section:

Path=%ResourceDir%\Themes\Aero\Aero.msstyles

Replace it with the following line:

Path=%ResourceDir%\Themes\windows\windows.msstyles

Once you complete all these steps, all you have to do is double-click the new windows.theme file and you're done. Colored title bars should be applied in Windows 10.

If you want to go back to the default configuration, simply double-click the original aero.theme file and the original settings should be re-applied.

Which produces this:

This has probably been asked before but cant find any recent posts on it.

Just turned on my HTPC for the first time in a few months and on booting windows 10 im getting a message saying one of the files has expired (i believe its winload.exe). Im guessing this is because my build of Windows 10 has expired.

Question is i have got the win10 image on my USB stick but i cant see a way i can repair my build of windows without losing my programs and app (not personal data). Is there a way i can keep my programs and apps without losing them?

Also whats MS stance on multiple computers in the house hold running Windows 10, i have a product key for windows 10 on my main rig??

Can't you do an In-Place upgrade?

They need to have their own license, Windows 7 and up.

I upgraded my laptop to WIndows 10, I use it to tether from my phone a lot and it eats too much data. I only upgraded because it has an option to set a wifi connection as "metered" and limit data use on it. But it's entirely useless. The only app that I seem to bne able to block is outlook, which is what I need tethering for. The web browsers (with youtube tabs open) do not block, nor do any bittorrent etc.

So the only feature I wanted is useless.

I'm just curiouis are there any power productivity features availability that are worth keeping windows 10 for?

The biggest pet peeve of mine is how confusing and difficult it is to open and save files in programs when working with deep folders. The open/save dialoge varies from app to app, Windows has also added another prompt in office 2013 onwards (Adobe has this as well). Where before opening the local save directory it will give you the option of saving in my computer/cloud etc. This is so annoying.

Does WIndows 10 have easier process of doing this or is it worse?

~18 months ago, I bought a Windows 8.1 CD from OCuk, I think it was an OEM version, which was installed on my old Q9300 system.

Having finally upgraded to X99, I have unusually not passed my Q9300 system on to my better half, because it became incredibly unstable in the last few weeks of its life. Instead, I am currently building a Z170 system upgrade for her and the Q9300 is currently penciled in to be decommissioned.

I believe at some point in recent years, the rules about transferring OEM keys from one system to another changed, becoming similar to retail keys.

If it was 8.1 OEM, do the above grounds give me the right to install that 8.1 on her Z170 system, or even install Windows 10 directly with its key?
