Windows 10

So we'll get an ISO image we can burn to disk if we schedule this upgrade?

I'd be more inclined to try it in that case as that would mean I could do a fresh install again whenever I wanted into the future.

no. the windows update method will just install/upgrade to win10.

:( Looks like I'll have to pony up for it. Do you guys reckon buying Windows 8.1 Pro Student for £50 is the best way?

Just noticed this on specification page's upgrade editions section:

Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 enterprise offerings outside of this offer.

You probably will get free Windows 10 Enterprise if your copy of Windows 7/8/8.1 Enterprise are on volume license.

If not then yes get Windows 8.1 Pro Student is the best way but you can get it cheaper at £43.75 after 15% quidco cashback. ;)

Free upgrade is only for 1 year then you have to buy it,Seriulsy Microsoft..you want us to pay for features that should have been in widows 8.0/8.1 in the first place?..no thanks.

Il be sticking with windows 8.1 + Startisback.

Took a good long time for the Uni to switch to 8.1, so I'm not sure I'll still be a student when they start offering Windows 10 to us. :p

I reserved an upgrade though I still might not use it.

If we're upgrading from Win 7, will we be able to reinstall from a Win10 iso in future or would we still have to install 7 then go through the updates and upgrade again?

By that logic, everyone should have stuck with Windows 1.0...

Its not that,Its the fact they didnt give us what we wanted in Windows 8/8.1..a proper built in start menu etc..and now they want to lure us in with a free year trial and then we have to pay for it as a whole new OS...Which imo is...you know what.

You know call of duty throws out the same crap year after year?..this is how it feels 8.1 - 10.

 Windows 10 is a substantial upgrade from 8.1, nevermind 7, and if you take the free upgrade in the first year, that's it, you have Windows 10 for however long you like. You only have to pay to upgrade after that, not to continue using it if you upgrade in the first year.

It appears it's upgradeable / installable for a year free for current legit licence holders and then after a year you have to buy it.

The people who install it under a year get to keep that liecence for free even after it's installed.

its free isnt it? if you take up the offer within the first year that is, if you dont take it up then yes you have to pay............

yeah. paying for a free upgrade after a year, that's exactly what Microsoft want you to do.

probably best you stick with 8.1.

Um No. You are given 1 year to upgrade and be able to do so for free.

  • If you upgrade within that year - you don't need to pay because you did it within the timescale Microsoft have quoted. Your licence will remain a free licence.
  • If you don't upgrade within that year - you have to pay as its outwith the timescale Microsoft quoted.

By your logic, if you buy a tin of baked beans whilst the supermarket is doing a buy 1 get 1 free offer, the retailer will then ask you to pay for that second tin after the promotion is over :\

Exactly, I don't see where the confusion is for some people.
