Windows 10

Anyone knows what's going to happen to us who have installed w10 preview.

As gareth has said, if you installed it over a Windows 7 or 8 install using Windows Update it will automatically update to the final version on release. Microsoft have confirmed this.

If you have installed a preview from a clean install it will require a clean install of Windows 10 (presumably because it doesn't have any CD key in it to update to 10). Again this is from Microsoft.

I'm not too sure I'm that keen tbh, I didn't realise it was an automatic update...

What if your current 7/8 install is a bit flaky, the 10 install will inherit all of that won't it :(

I'd much prefer to do a fresh install.

You will be able to do a fresh install. Microsoft have confirmed that Windows 7 users without SP1 and Windows 8.0 users will get the free upgrade, but won't be able to use the little app that's started popping up. They will need to do a clean install from an ISO which will be available upon release.

Also as with Glaucus' comment above, those of us with Windows 7 or 8.x keys not in use because we have installed Windows 10 Preview from an ISO will still be able to upgrade our 7 or 8.x licenses to 10, but will need to use an ISO.

So will OEM versions be valid for the free upgrade?

Yes.

I'm moving to a new SSD drive in the next week or two I have a brand new wins 8.1 disc I want to install. If I install that a month before wins 10 releases will I have to do a clean iso install of wins 10 or a upgrade from my new wins 8.1?

you can do the upgrade from 8.1 to win 10 without having to do a clean install

My wife's laptop needs a reinstall to an ssd at some point. Currently running Windows 7, anyone know what would be the best way to do it and still get the free upgrade to Windows 10.

Leave it as it is, take the Upgrade to W10 through the little task bar icon. And then when you've done that and installed W10 after the end of July, wipe it and clean install using the Microsoft ISO downloads.

We don't know wether its the process of Reserving W10 or actually taking the Update that will do whatever is needed for your key to be valid.

Or, wait for the news on how Non SP1 Windows 7 and Windows 8.0 users are expected to upgrade and do that, as these will be clean installs.

does anyone know if you can use a windows 7 32 bit key to upgrade to windows 10 64 bit?

I have a spare windows 7 DVD with key but need 64 bit windows 10 rather than 32 bit windows

I accepted the popup for windows 10.

I too will want an ISO for a clean install at least on my gaming PC. The laptops I'm not too bothered about.

Already blocked the update being pushed out to our machines - although I've seen a few places mention it won't go to domain-joined machines, plus we only have a few older Win7 Pro builds, and it won't affect the proper Win7 Ent stuff (plus 8.1 Update Ent which is the most deployed).

Don't think we'll be taking our machines to Win 10 until the next summer break (before start of academic year 2016/17) so it'll give us plenty of chance to update domain controllers and Config Manager ready for pushing images.

Found this:

For those who signed up and downloaded a pre-release build of Windows 10, on July 29th, you will receive the GA (General Availability) build of the OS, Microsoft has confirmed. This should not come as a big surprise but it clears up any bit of confusion for those who are using the pre-release bits and want to make the jump to the final release.

Exciting times ahead, I'm jumping from 7 to 10.

I used windows 10 at the beginning of the year and quite liked it, removed and went back to 7 as was having PC issues and wanted to make sure it wasn't caused by windows 10 and not gone back since.

looking forward to the release of windows 10 as got 2 laptops and my PC

Confused :

Windows 10 will be free (for the first year) so everyone will upgrade for free

but then , how much will it cost ? they are clever not mentioning any prices !!

Another question, apologies if it's already been answered, but today at work a Windows 8 machine I use prompted me for an email whereas the 3x Windows 7 machines I use at home have not? Does this mean I only get one install per IP address or something

Thanks.

it can't be the ip address because your work and home pc's would have different ip addresss

but anyway same thing happen to me.

if u right click on the get windows 10 then click check upgrade status, u will see it's done.
