Windows 10

8.1 here on 2 laptops + 1 pc. on the pc it asked for a email address but both laptops didn't

but if i right click on the get windows 10 then click check upgrade status, i see it's done.

Could that possibly be because you are using the same product key on 3 machines?

I had to forcefully trigger it on mine.

1) Open the Control Panel, choose Administrative Tools, and then fire up the Task Scheduler.

2) Expand Task Scheduler Library, then Microsoft, then Windows, and finally scroll down to expand Setup

3) Click the folder GWXTriggers and on the far right hit Run.

Going to have to be patient I think...mine isn't showing up at the moment and doing the above doesn't work. Damn

also just had the pop up to reserve my free upgrade

anyone know if it still comes or keeps windows media centre? I need that to watch tv on

Confused :

Windows 10 will be free (for the first year) so everyone will upgrade for free

but then , how much will it cost ? they are clever not mentioning any prices !!

Nothing, as ling as you upgrade in the first year its free for live.
And as such the price does not matter and they haven't released that yet.

Not sure why everyone getting confused. It's the offer is valid fir the year, not the license.

No media centre as far as we know :(. Not sure what I will do on htpc. I think it will be worth upgrading to keep apps up to date and hopefully new apps. But I'll have ti replace media centre with something else.

Just had the Win10 box appear on my lads Win7 machine, have "Reserved" his Win10 copy for when it gets released.

Will stick to my Win8.1 for a while to see what 10 is about.

Is there a catch somewhere? Doesn't seem very MS to give away an OS for free.

its free forever for users that upgrade in that first year. There is no hidden charges. After the first year if you want Windows 10 you have to buy it.

Maybe they didnt word it right as there seems to be a lot of confusion.

Windows 10 is given as a free update to Win7/8/8.1 users for the first year from its release end of July. You dont have to pay anything in the 2nd year onwards its a free update.

No catch, it's not where ma make there money from, it's a declining revenue source in the modern world. They make there money from all the subscriptions and stores. Skype, office, music pass, music, videos, app store etc.

Basically following what apple have done, get as many people on their os as possible and then sell the addons.

Actually it makes sense. If you have loads and loads of different versions of Windows out there whats the best way to try and get everyone up to date and on the same version. Give the latest OS for free. They can afford it and probably saves them money.

Providing updates for Win 7, Win 8, Win 8.1 and Win 10 is just a major headache for MS.

Ahh ok, that's good to know. Thanks Glaucus :D

He's happy, not sure why, but I believe it's because I said is was "free".

I'm guessing going from 7 to 10 will require a fresh install? What if I want to do a fresh install in the future, how does that work? Will I be able to download an ISO from MS and use that to any future fresh installs for example? And if so where do I get the product key from?

Apologies for asking these as if this is the Microsoft support forum. I've just never done an upgrade install before, always a fresh one, so I'm not sure of the process.

No. You can in place upgrade 7 so long as it's SP1.

You can do a fresh install, Microsoft will release ISOs (or more likely a bootable USB utility) like they have with 8.

Your product key will be your 7 key.

Can we get a FAQ stickied or something!?

I've reserved my upgrade on my Win 7 desktop PC (which I don't want to upgrade just yet to avoid the driver/compatibility issues etc.).

But I've got no notification on my Win 8.1 laptop which I would love to upgrade! Do I just have to wait?

I'm not sure I'm reading this right.....

Lots of questions about what it will cost after a year. So is it the case that this is a free upgrade that will last a year and need renewing at a cost, or is this the full product available for free for one year and yours to keep forever once upgraded??

EDIT: Ignore, answered several times. I just hadn't refreshed the page for a while.

Once upgraded, full product free forever...
