Windows 10

If you install Windows 10 Insider Preview, on release would you then have to install 8.1 again to then upgrade to 10 again?
I'm thinking that if you buy a Windows 10 key or "upgrade" a Windows 8/8.1 key, you could just change the key in Windows to a "full" key and re-activate, rather than re-installing.

Just in case that's not going to happen, I'm preparing to do a full wipe and install on release of Windows 10.:D

Most Vista era kit won't have drivers for Windows 10. The OS is eight years old and hasn't been sold with any PCs for six.

MS logic is buy a new PC, get a copy of Windows 10 included.

Theres a noted effect in the balance sheets of tech companies when windows comes out. It generates sales across the industry as people upgrade to get into that latest windows and whatever hype there is, this time its voice detection I guess?

Personally I think they should let everyone upgrade their junky vista especially for say a month to 10 and I imagine a lot of the basic generic hardware works anyway

I'm still on build 10074 on my HTPC. I now need 5GB of space for the latest update from Windows. My ssd is only 30GB, 15GB taken up by Windows and 5.6GB free space.
So, that leaves about 8GB missing space, is this the hibernation file and can I delete it, without affecting anything else?

check system restore, if this is enabled disable it and remove restore points as it should free up some space

I have not read the entire thread. Does anyone know if we get a new Windows 10 product key in exchange for our 7 or 8 key?

you will need to upgrade from W7\8.1 to W10 which then upgrades your current key to work with W10 on a clean install etc.

you cant do a clean install from W10 without doing the upgrade from a previous OS first

Thank you for the information. That makes sense, but does it also mean that the Windows 7 or 8 key then becomes void?

they haven't released anything yet (as far as im aware) that states once upgraded you can roll back to your previous OS.

once upgraded to W10 your windows 7\8.1 key will be flagged usable with W10 so it will be the same key you used on W7\8.1

Also, Do a 'Disk Cleanup' and see if there's a "Windows.old" directory.. both can take a fair few Gb's

Thanks a lot Ed, much obliged.

One their Insider Programme page Microsoft do include the statement "For instructions on backing up your phone before installing Insider Preview, or to learn how to restore your phone back to Windows Phone 8.1, see Back up and restore." which may not be strictly considered to be a 'roll back' as such, is surely almost as good as.

I am actually not that clear about Windows activation keys. At the bottom of the Control Panel 'System' page I have a product ID, which consists of four, 5 character strings, separated by hyphens.

Is this actually the full product key which you could enter, when prompted, on a re-installation of Windows 8.1. or in time on Windows 10?

Thanks! :)

Check for the hibernation file, c:\hiberfil.sys

If it's there and several GB disable hibernation at the command prompt

powercfg /h off

Such a mess, compared to Apple.

So I will have to go back from test W10, to win7 to be able to get new, full win10...
luckily havent installed much apps on win10, wont be too much hassle ;)

Which is why I wont be paying for it. :)

Look. You are completely missing the point I am making.

I'm not sure I get your point?

Your either going to stay with Vista out of spite (lol), go with Linux from now on (dem games, yo) or pirate Windows 10 (banhammer). Which one is it?

Windows 10 is the platform for all Windows versions going forward. It is where you will want to be within a year or so or you will be abandoned by Microsoft.
