Windows 10

The full screen Start looks a lot tidier, but other than that I don't really know.

I'm back on Preview build 10130 now I know I can just rock Previews for the foreseeable future. A couple of things I noticed during the ISO installation is they now ask you to set a Pin as part of setup, and OneDrive sync is on by default now.

But miss the old OneDrive, the placeholders have now gone :( It only shows you what you have synced.

Would it make any difference to what version I get, say if I upgrade from my Win 7 Home or Win 8.1 Pro. Only reason I ask is because I am doing a fresh install and want to know if it’s worth installing 8.1 to get pro version of 10.

If you upgrade from WIN 7 Home you will get WIN 10 Home
If you upgrade from WIN 8.1 Pro you will get WIN 10 Pro

there are different versions of W8.1 as well

W8.1 (vanilla) or N version - this is equivalent to W7 Home in terms of upgrade to W10
W8.1 Pro - this is equivalent to W7 Pro and Ultimate in terms of upgrade to W10 Pro
W8.1 Enterprise - naturally upgrades to W10 Enterprise

you are not comparing like for like there, also W8.1 pro has a heck lot more features and tools to W8.1 N or vanilla

get your windows validated, if non-genuine, buy an OEM/Upgrade license in whatever version you need. Done...what's this fuss all about?

more critically what's the performance like for those have been testers. i.e. stability, and bench scores...like for like comparisons.

Microsoft are not offering a free upgrade to anyone running WIN7-WIN8 Enterprise!

Thats pretty good, but not quite right. Windows 8 users won't get an upgrade to 10, you need to update to 8.1 first.

An I don't think you can use the Windows Update route to install the 10 Preview over Windows 8 at all.

Other than that, its a nice diagram.

Recent builds have been fine. Very stable and no issues with normal performance.

Graphics performance has been a bit hit and miss, but thats mainly due to a lack of drivers. Both nVidia and AMD are now making Windows 10 drivers so we should be seeing parity to 8.1 on that side now too.

The N version is without IE or Media Player, and comes in both Home and Pro flavours. There is no 'vanilla'.

There is:
8.1 (Home) and 8.1 (Home) N, which will upgrade to 10 (Home) and 10 (Home) N
8.1 Pro and 8.1 Pro N, which will upgrade to 10 Pro and 10 Pro N
8.1 Enterprise, which doesn't qualify for the free upgrade.
7 Home, which will upgrade to 10 Home
7 Pro, which will upgrade to 10 Pro
7 Ultimate, which will upgrade to 10 Pro
7 Enterprise, which doesn't qualify for the free upgrade.

Trouble installing build 10130 or higher?

Turn on your motherboard's bios setting related to hardware DEP. ;)

I cannot upgrade it just fails and restores itself. I have now gone back to 8.1 and will do a fresh install once 10 releases. I actually really like 10 it works well.

Microsoft should have created 1 version! "Windows 10". Made it 64 bit ONLY. Gave users who are running a legit OS regardless of what version and made it installable by ISO only as a fresh install!

Non of this upgrade business or different versions! For this reason I WILL stick with OSX.

^^ In my opinion! :)

that's what apple likes to do, i.e. treat everyone the same and assume all apple consumers are idiots.

MS upgrades are installable by ISO as you can download it afterwards.

although I didn't quite appreciate that the Enterprise versions won't get free upgrades, but that does make sense. Business can afford such costs as they overhaul their hardware. and if they offered free upgrades for all enterprise 8.1 then they wont have any revenues other than OEM builds and limited retail sales...

So.. is there anything to replace the media add-on that I have with Windows 8/8.1 in windows 10?

Also... I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Win 8. Is there a way I can end up getting two copies of windows 10, if I use the win 7 key, and then use the win 8 key etc?

Is that a thinly veiled insult?

I'll refer to you Steve Jobs making lots of sense nine years ago :

Enterprise is only available to customers on Software Assurance, so they're already covered for upgrades anyway as part of that subscription. It's not difficult to understand.
