Windows 10

Well mine's a bit screwed. Taskbar becomes unresponsive still, no start menu, huge hangs for no reason, takes an age to open command prompt, task manager and settings, and hangs in the settings menu when I can get it open. Also can't right click in any explorer windows. Other than that, actual programs seem to run fine!

sfc /scannow and Dism do nothing to fix the problems. if I can get settings to stay open long enough I'll try reverting back to 7, but with the state it's in I can't see that going well.
 
Are all these problems people are encountering from upgrading during the day? Or is it something else? I done it after midnight. Couldn't have went any better, maybe 5 minutes of CPU and hard drive activity but everything was responsive before and after and that was that. 0% - 3% CPU/HDD usage.

Apart from having to manually update the track pad since it was dead.

Windows 10 is faster and fluid than Windows 8. Only thing I don't like about it is Windows Update. Since Microsoft has had many occurrences of releasing and pulling duff updates. There is no longer an option, check and notify for updates only.
 
I ended up being very patient with it and getting into settings to revert back to 7, which couldn't have gone smoother, all seems well apart from having uninstalled my ethernet and intel drivers.

I might try again over the weekend after seeing how well it reverted.

Happened to me with Insider build months ago, when taskbar and start button froze and hang not responsive then I opened task manager and go to windows processes and click on Windows Explorer and you will notice restart button at the end rather than end task, click it then start, taskbar and notification worked.

I tried that a couple of times before deciding to revert back to 7, no dice unfortunately. I even tried the powershell fic for supposedly getting start to work without any luck. In the end I noticed that I'd have to leave it for 15 minutes after startup, and then any explorer/start/taskbar process would be an operation behind......so the first taskbar based request wouldn't do anything, a subsequent request would then trigger the prior to execute and so on and so on. Had to get to settings through the drive explorer and it would open on the fifth time of asking.

All very strange, but the basic explorer/start/taskbar of Windows was simply borked, not to mention that task manager would only work very rarely.

It has a few nice bits such as the DVR feature, which let's you record your last minute or so of gameplay even if you haven't previously started recording.
 
I have been having random glitches like my computer taking ages to open my drives for some reason. I have also had the system freeze to then start working again but a lot of my task bar icons missing or just black squares ?

It's always fixed with a re-start but I do find I'm doing this a fair bit.
 
Just upgraded to Windows 10. All seemed fine.

Until I restarted. Now, I'm stuck at the lock screen with an unresponsive mouse and kb. They're plugged in and work fine...But not working on the lock screen. The clock is active so the pc hasn't crashed, but I can't use it.

Anyone know how to break out of this? Tried unplugging and replugging the mouse..nothing.

Is it a basic USB keyboard or something which needs a specific driver? There are a few things you can try to diagnose the problem...

Does the keyboard work to get into and navigate around the BIOS screens?
Does the keyboard and mouse work in safe mode?
Does a replacement (basic USB) keyboard and mouse work?

I'm guessing it's going to be either a driver or incompatible hardware problem. Did you run the Windows 10 compatibility checker before upgrading?

The mouse/kb are fine. They worked fine in Windows straight after the upgrade, and operate in the bios fine. They've never needed drivers afaik. One thing I notice...caps lock and num lock work fine while booting, but as soon as I get to the lock screen they stop working.

I would try safe mode, but of course, you can no longer get to it from a cold boot, so I've read...you can only restart to safe mode from the start menu, but of course, I can't do anything because I'm stuck at the lock screen. Genius :rolleyes:

The only idea I have left it's to try and see if I can dig out a PS2/USB adapter, or ps2 mouse. Haven't seen one of those for a few years though.

Found the option to boot to safe mode...yay!
Computer restarts to a message..."something went wrong, we'll restart for you :("
Machine restarts normally...back to the lock screen.

I'm beginning to lose my temper.

Can you actually boot into safe mode and have a working desktop...?
 
Damn I hoped that if it did for you then you could run netplwiz and just untick the choice to need the lockscreen.

You must have had a password on your previous Windows to get the lockscreen.
 
Nope. Never had a password.

I seem to be able to get the recovery mode working by pressing the reset button. I've done that and found an option to reset the installation entirely. Trying that now.

What an utter faff. All because of a lock screen designed for tablets. Should be disabled by default for desktops.
